Yeah, I think we can all relate to that.. it's not been a great year and I fear it's ending all too quickly unless we get a warm spell.. edited to say I've just seen more of Tack's gorgeous potted roses... such a treat..
I love your pots @Tack, stunning. Ive brought some this year (the homebase ones @Mr. Vine Eye kindly 'road tested' ) for a few shorter height roses to go in once ive drilled drainage holes. Im running out of back garden space but the front is untapped! Ive got munstead on order for starters, once I haul out the grotty shrubs in there come spring. Lots of bulbs planted but wildflowers didnt really work too well over summer. I want to try to add water drip pipe too as it gets very hot and dry there.
Second flush off to a good start now (About 1/4 out of 50ish roses...), brother cadfael and glenfidditch both especially abundant so far, with sweet Syrie and the hulthemias not far behind. Eden rose is now out so pics to follow!
@Tack Your patio display is incredible!! I’m particularly drawn to that yellow rose.. May I ask what variety is it? Also, is that a cosmos you’re growing by the obelisk?
@Mr. Vine Eye That genie in a lamp description is very vivid! Ha! That’s quite a clever way to display a climber..
I was lucky to have gotten my plot earlier in December and thankfully having had to deal with thieving neighbours.. as a result I’ve dug out most of my beds when the weather was much cooler. I have however tried to dig up a few more beds in summer for more crops and I can totally relate to what you said about digging in the summer heat..
@Rojas warm welcome. No wonder your forum name translates to 'roses'. Please share your roses with us. Nice garden you have there with kuekenhof style tulip planting, dahlias, lupins and all. Looking forward to even more photos.
I like the flexibility afforded by growing the expensive DA roses in pots. Whenever I moved houses, I have taken them with me, my sort of portable cut flower garden. Moreover, in my current fully paved front driveway cum garden, potted roses are the only option. Having said that, I have had roses in the ground before and they have done extremely well with very little care and just relying on rain for watering.

@Marlorena Thank you. I think someone mentioned last year that she can be slow, but I don't remember who. And I am willing to be more patient with climbers. Also, the plant wasn't the best - two canes only - from Peter Beales. As a coincidence, my mother got her too this year (she used to said she doesn't like roses but bought five this year... I wonder how that happened and she's becoming a Kordes fan) and I think she grows better for her but also flowered late.
I think it's been a bad year for blackspot. Even Olivia almost defoliated for me and she was spotless last year. Almost everything, that looks good now, is on the second set of leaves or flowering on the new growth.
Welcome @Rojas, you look to have a lovely garden and a good size too.
I also think this year has been lacklustre...the late frosts that killed off my early buds and although there had been a lovely dry late spring, for months now it has been really dreary and constantly drizzley which not only makes the flowers manky but makes the garden unpleasant to be in. I think flower spikes do better in this kind of weather than flat flowers.
@purplerallim, how big is your Blue for You please? I had a tiny pot for mine based on the Beales catalogue size of 2' x 1.5' but yours looks to be larger than that. I damaged my last one by tripping over it several times and threw it out in the end and want this one to have a better start😉
At the moment it is 3ft wide by 4 1/2 high @Victoria Sponge This is after it's initial growth early in the season which flowered and I cut back by a foot. It is a vigorous grower, and after 3years I gave it a hard cut back ( to half the height it is now) after which it sulked for a year, but then came back like this. It is in a raised bed three bricks high, but open to the ground below, so the base of the plant never gets wet, but as our clay soil never dries out has access to moisture. It seems to love the full sun for 5 hours a day. This means it will need quite an area to grow in Victoria.😁
Mixed year for me after the late start, some roses never really got going, whilst others bloomed their socks off all summer. We’ve had far fewer ‘heat days’ of 30ºc + than normal (whatever that is) which helped. Constant attack by sawflies didn’t; roses have just finished growing a new set of foliage only for the next generation of curled sawfly slugs to emerge 😠

I think 'The Prince' has been a real find for both yourself and Tack this year..
..wow. I have a 'heatwave' arriving from Sunday, for about a week... mid to upper 70's... I'd forgotten what it's like.. those in warm climates will think it's just a bit mild..
