@Victoria Sponge, I have a tiny, young Blush Noisette. I get a faint whiff of something, occasionally. HMF says ‘mild to strong clove fragrance’. I could never have identified clove, just something vaguely musky is the best I can do. My sense of smell has been traditionally poor, but over the last year or two it’s got better, the more I sniff the more different fragrance notes I can smell. Nose has pulled it’s socks up or roses have? No idea!
Well I climbed carefully into the border and sniffed a few different flowers, I don't think I did catch a waft the other day unless it smells different at a distance. To me it smells very mild, a cold, fresh scent like a cucumber. I don't have a great sense of smell and sometimes if I smell a very strong rose scent, I then can't smell another rose, which previously was scented but I had a fresh nose on this occasion.
I like @edhelka's vase display as well, a sweet mix of colours.
Gosh I just spent over an hour going through the posts on this thread.. so many inspiring pictures!
@m@Marlorena Sorry for vanishing for a week.. I’ve been cruising the Kennet and Avon and internet has been patchy at best.. this forum somehow doesn’t run well on weak connection even though Instagram does..
I’ve visited DA’s garden this weekend.. it was as gorgeous as I remembered it.. everything in full bloom.. this picture speaks for itself..
I’ve had a chance to review a few of the roses I had in mind.. namely Nye Bevan, The country Parson, Silas Marner and Princess Anne.
Nye Bevan seemed a bit spindly.. and the blooms remind me very much of Vanessa bell.. but I prefer VB as it seemed more floriferous and more fragrant
i was most impressed by The Country Parson.. I mean look at this..
I especially love the way the blooms fade very gracefully to almost white in colour.. it’s like having three varieties of roses (bright yellow, pale yellow and white) all in one..
and then I spotted this crown Princess Margaretta.. very impressive climber, lovely scent.. it has now been firmly added to my list.. I remember Marlorena has one too.. I love the way they all flower at the same time giving this most spectacular display..
And Princess Anne.. really lovely as a potted rose.. and given DA’s recommendation for a windy spot I have given in to the temptation and bought one for the windiest spot on my balcony..
Spotted this Malvern Hills and immediately thought of @Mr. Vine Eye’s rather more impressive specimen..
All the good things aside. I was quite surprised to see that this year they seem to have a few beds that only have what looked like first year unestablished roses.. and a few beds were empty altogether. I’m not sure if this is covid related..
I never made it to Wollerton Oll Hall.. traffic was horrendous on the way back from the south and I nearly missed the pre booked entry time for DA garden..
My early bloomers such as Desdemona have just finished their first flush of flowers which I’ve promptly deadheaded..
This late comer ie the first year bare root planted Gabriel Oak is stealing the limelight now..
Lady Emma Hamilton has also been really late to the show this year.. the initial few blooms were very flimsy and shattered as soon as they opened up.. that has improved since..
@celcius_kkw Thanks for posting the photos of DA gardens. We are considering going too but probably won't be able to make it or too late and it won't be worth it... The booking system complicates things for us. Do you have any photos of mature Silas Marner?
I'm really pleased you like Scarborough Fair @edhelka, I love the look of it and have given it one of the very few, choice garden spots.
Thank you for those pictures @celcius_kkw , DA looks like I'd love to visit it. I think TCP is high on my desirable list now, with your photo and @Marlorena's recomendation it must be a winner. I hope you enjoyed your cruise. In my parents' time I enjoyed the K and A on the family narrow boat with them.
I had Blush Noisette in a pot on a warm patio last summer. I really missed its lovely scent when I planted it out so it is surprising to hear others can't smell much. I loved passing by , it didn't need to be sniffed to catch it. On a warm day I'll have to climb into the bed and sniff again.
I like your 'La Belle Rouge' @edhelka .. very nice Ark Angel @logan ..
@celcius_kkw ..thanks for checking in Adrian, glad you had a nice trip away on the Canal, lucky you!.. and what fabulous photos..
.. just to add, we've seen how they put 2 or even 3 of the same in a large pot though, so we need to be aware of that, when we see such a full look to their potted roses.. but you can see why when you look at The Country Parson..
..also that wonderful Crown Princess Margarita.. it may be 2 roses they have there, they plant 2 together sometimes.. I don't have it myself, but isn't it fabulous?
.. your own roses are looking good too as I would expect..
