I know that some people derive great pleasure from swimming pools but somehow the idea of putting my mouth into water that contains other peopleβs skin scurf, hair and sebaceous secretions just makes me squirm.
I had to design the water treatment system for a swimming pool once, and read 'The Pool Water guide' in order to understand the requirements. It lists, in graphic detail, all the, er, stuff that ends up in swimming pool water that the treatment system has to deal with. I will never get in a swimming pool ever again.
There's a piece of research out there where a university set up a typical bike bathroom complete with toothbrushes in a glass hanging from the wall above the sink. They encouraged staff and students to use the toilet for a period of time. They then sampled the whole room to see what they could find. The fecal matter was one thing they looked for and it got everywhere. Especially on the toothbrush!!! Apparently flushing toilets can really spread out widely!!!!
Seriously, cover the head of your toothbrush or use a separate toilet. I think that tops swimming pools somehow because you can't avoid your bathroom I think.
I had a bit of a grump on a dog related thread earlier today. I have strongly held views about all dogs being properly trained and not letting small dogs of because of their size. It was on a thread about rescue dog. Thinking back I think I went to strongly into the matter. Is that what a curmudgeon is about??
Northernjo, when I was Nursing,we watched videos, you can see them online about the aerosol effect, when you pee,(sorry especially men,it goes everywhere, you should put the lid down before you flush.I had a very curmudgeonly grump on MN, regards to washing your hands after the loo, you wouldn't believe how many people believe because you use paper it's unessential, I said paper was porous, they ", thought" I am obviously not using enough! I tried to find Coughing Violet online, couldn't, regards to Corona, like the recussi Annie, dummy only..she has bright purple ,"breath" she coughs, even normal breath goes way beyond 2 mtr. Who was it who put on another post, they had put their plants outside because the frost had finished, got a thick one here!
Lid down every flush. Cough or sneeze into your elbow. Wash hands after every type of toilet visit. Yes, I have my rules regarding toilet use. I'm also guilty of flushing every time. Not environmental wrt water use but its sometimes like you can smell urine in theΒ air if you don't. Truth is without a flush you probably have it in the air.
Grump of the day. Train cancelled because of signalling issues. Going to be an hour late in. If I drive in I'll be expected to from now on. My broken arm is nearly healed but I just don't think I'm healed enough for gear changes and turning the wheel. Not risking a setback. What's the legal position with unavoidable delays to getting into work by public transport? I don't like being late and like this still doesn't help with that.
I'm not medical in any way so might be totally wrong. I accept the aerosol effect, and studies showing "particles" in the air / on surfaces / toothbrushes etc, but is there any hard evidence that these "particles" are in sufficient number to actually do us any harm?Β IMHO the overwhelming majority of folk don't cover their toothbrushes or put them in cupboards, and we're not all dropping down ill. Isn't that how we develop an immune system? by being exposed to tiny amounts of things which can , technically, do us harm?Β As I said, I might be totally wrong.
OH has been trained from day one.Β Toilet lid down every time.Β I also agree with @Hostafan1 about giving your immune system a workout so it doesn't turn on its own body and develops allergies and other difficulties.
I agree with @Hostafan1 if faecal matter on toothbrushes harmed you why are people not dead of it? Itβs possible to get far too obsessed about bacteria most of which is harmless and much of which is beneficial. People drink their own urine, they believe it has health benefits. Isnβt there proof that obsessive cleanliness causes allergies etc?Β
