@Marlorena I've been thinking about them many times. I love the colours and the blooms, although I am not sure about the plants, they are quite big, aren't they? And I think they need mass planting to look really good. At least 3-5 plants or a drift of them. You are right they should do well here but I haven't seen them in any garden around. Maybe people see them as too difficult to grow, or our local GC doesn't sell them, I don't know. But the biggest problem is that I don't have a suitable spot for them. Not only because of their size but also because I don't use blue in my back garden. My front garden is not suitable - too exposed, west-facing (slightly to the north, it's shady, mossy and cold in winter but it gets harsh afternoon sun in summer) and I don't have water there, all water needs to be brought in cans from the back. Maybe I'll rethink the no-blue-colour rule in the back garden one day
@celcius_kkw Your bulbs are absolutely breathtaking!
Tulips and roses (almost all tulips planted last year, some even earlier, I am happy to see them coming back, and it looks like the green and white ones multiplied). And I counted 6 buds on General Schablikine
@celcius_kkw, lovely spring display. You should have seen the bed of munstead wood in Kew rose garden. It looked so funny with sparsely planted, awkward dwarf mws. Everything else was much larger, completely filled.
Thanks everyone. The spring bulbs really add so much to my balcony garden at a time when the roses are yet to bloom.. it’s nice to have lots of colours in spring before the main season of roses start.
@Omori I don’t quite have the luxury of another giant pot for planting in threes on my balcony anymore.. but I agree I think MW will look more substantial that way since it’s a relatively small shrub. I can’t wait till the day when I have a giant garden where I could go ballistic and shop till I drop like you guys on places like TCL.. 😆
@edhelka your garden is so perfectly manicured, weeded and mulched! Very pleasing to the eye.. and even more pleasing to my inner OCD..! 🤩
@newbie77 That does make me feel much less guilty.. I always feel like I’ve done something wrong with my MW.. and it looks so awkward amongst its fellow third year roses. I haven’t been to Kew yet but I intend to visit in September when I will be in London for the Chelsea flower show.
Well looks like a lot of you have been having a buying spree . Can't remember who bought what after 40 post but I do have a few mentioned or grown them, Phlox monica L Bell ( great scent ) and white admiral - campanula lactifora tend to fall over if exposed- geranium orion - monarda Beauty of cobham - kniphofia tawny king - aster little carlow need staking it just falls over without fail and some others that have slipped my mind.
I have some Meconopsis if you can grow them you should beautiful blue flowers that stop you in your tracks . Most things look better on mass but even one blue meconopsis is worth growing . Lingholm is reliable and one of the longest lived varieties to grow . Avoid the afternoon sun and they do need acidic soil and free draining but moist soil , one of mine died for being to wet in Summer . I have two plants Lingholm.
I had a bit of a Mac spree in January. They were all good quality plants, but I was a bit frustrated that the pots weren't labelled. Maybe they were having an off day.
@iaincd ...great roses Iain... 'Mutabilis' in a pot, and looking good too.. not far behind my new one..
@Perki ..those are good looking plants... best of luck with them.. and thanks for the perennial info.. I'm not sure they had 'Lingholm'.. can't remember.. looking forward to seeing your Meconopsis later on.. wasn't aware you had them, but let me say I'm not surprised there.. maybe you have the right conditions..
@Fire ..sorry to hear you didn't get any labels.. I think all mine had them, so maybe just an oversight but we do need our labels..
@Perki I'm looking forward to seeing your meconopsis also. In theory I ought to be able to grow them, being in Scotland and all which they like but my soil is far too dry and sandy for them and I don't think they'd appreciate the sea breezes! I'll just have to appreciate other peoples plants. Proteas eh? That's rather exotic and exciting!

Weather was a bit challenging last week...much better now though still really cold at night.
