Gardening is supposed to be enjoyable and restful and not a constant battle with insects of all types.

It may be that you are naturally allergic to the out doors and if it is affecting your husband it may be time to get yourself referred to a GP to have some tests.

    Good luck.

That was probably because the Avon body spray is not licensed as an insect repellant, same thing happened with piles of coffee grounds around your plants to deter slugs. Works but not allowed to say as it wasn’t licensed.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

@BenCotto that made me laugh 🤣
Well I'll give it a go if it stops me getting bitten to bits by bloody horrible things! It wouldn't be so bad if I new exactly what it was that bit me, it's the not knowing that's winding me up and stressing me out!
@Lyn yes I think I'm gonna cover my self in antiseptic and hope for the best and look into the Avon product! Also is there anything else that deters slugs because they seem to be chomping away at my hollyhocks like greedy  little sods!?

I got my supply off Amazon. I'm a which member and I have no idea why they were so scathing about asss. It works for me. If I go down the shady end without it, I get bitten. If I say bugger it, I can't be bothered to do the back of my neck or my ankles, that's where I get bitten.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I've had similar, both in this country and abroad.  The swelling is usually followed by huge blisters, yuk.  Pharmacists have said it's just a bad allergic reaction to whatever is doing the biting.  Antihistamines usually help, plus germoline does soothe a little.  My sister had a really bad reaction to a bee sting last week and she found old fashioned calamine lotion really took the heat out.  Perhaps worth a try?

@Poly-anthus actually yes calamine lotion makes sense, didn't think of that one! I think mine might blister so its gonna be enormous and I'm really not looking forward to that, the swelling is about 4/5 inches across circular, I just hope it doesn't!

Asss is good, but really doesn't work on bastards like deer fly. I smothered myself but still got devoured in the woods at Sissinghurst last year.

The best procedure I find, for bites, is to put on some anti-his cream /a dab of tea tree oil  or whatever and cover the bite immediately. It's usually the rubbing and scratching that brings on the great inflammation. Avoid touching it and it will go down faster.

I just spray Boots insect repellant on the exposed bits and that works.

    Treeface

Apologies if my post appeared unhelpful as i was trying to be constructive.

We had a surgeon take up a plot on our allotment site last Summer and after a few visits he was quite ill and after some tests at his hospital he was diagnosed with something.

He had to give up the plot which was very sad for us who had helped him as he was a newbie.
