This is the poem I wrote on the loss of my last dog Oscar. He was partially blind from birth, but was the boss of the four we had and we lost him aged 16 and a half in 2017.
OSCAR
No more the bump of nose apon the leg
Oh there you are
No more the click of nails on laminate floor
The tail raised high and bouncy gate when food is on the go
The loss of slippers as pillow
The wistful look of what you have should be mine
The foot on paper, book, paint tray, well they are in my way
The nose in air when outside or gently pressed against a flower
I still see the flash of white out of the corner of my eye
But when I look he's gone
Quite a few people have contributed to a fund to name a guide dog after Nigel. I think of it as a thank you for the enjoyment he gave many viewers of the show.
I don’t agree Philippa. The dogs are part of the show and at some point the death of the pet would have to be announced or there’d be thousands of messages asking about the animal if it no longer featured. Would you have BBC staff replying to them individually, or maybe not at all?
A single, sensitive message online is all it takes to get the message out. Monty could have announced it in person on Friday but, if that was me, I would break down in tears. I think the way this was handled was the best.
