It seems to be the thng to share your life on social media nowadays. Most of its boring attention seeking posts but now and again it's something that touches you as in this case. I dont do social media, unless this forum counts, and appreciate you posting this @BenCotto
I read the book MD wrote about Nigel, it was a lovely read. Lovely dog and much loved. I don't think it's weird to announce it, would be weird if it hadn't.
Before anyone says "Yes but Monty's dog featured on TV ", it doesn't make any real difference - someone has lost someone/some animal close to their hearts - we don't all announce it to the world - do we ?
I still remember being upset when Blue Peter's Goldie died
"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
Nigel was a gorgeous, sweet tempered boy. I've enjoyed his presence on Gardeners World greatly. I shall always remember when Monty first got Nellie. The shots of Nigel and Nellie playing/ wrestling in the background while Monty was trying to do a piece to camera were joyful.
Sorry, Phillipa, but I completely disagree with you on this one. Nigel was a regular feature of the show, and for him to just "disappear" without any explanation would have aroused more questions and guesswork as to why he wasn't there. This way, we know the reason. I agree there are times when some people/celebs post every minute derail about what's going on in their lives on social media that we don't care about, and don't wish to know about, but this is a different situation - Nigel was, as I say, a regular part of the programme. He will be missed by many viewers, I'm sure.
The loss of any pet is always a sad affair but I find it quite creepy that people feel the need to Tweet or whatever about the death of a pet. It's a private issue surely - smacks of Princess Di hysteria - yes for sure you can sympathise but you don't know the pet and, in reality, it means nothing to you other than a passing thought. The majority of us have experienced it, many times over perhaps but I don't see much to gain in advertising to the world. A different matter if you mention it on a general chat forum I think but otherwise, I personally feel it is a case of "look what's happened in my life ". Before anyone says "Yes but Monty's dog featured on TV ", it doesn't make any real difference - someone has lost someone/some animal close to their hearts - we don't all announce it to the world - do we ?
