We lost our border terrier in March, he was taken ill quite suddenly and after x-rays, ultrasounds and blood tests was found to have a tumour in his abdomen. The vet told us he could operate, but that the op would be megabucks and that the tumour would likely return. So we had to let him go, myself and my daughter held him in his final moments. My wife couldn't be there, it was too much for her.
He is now buried near the pond and the garden is a sadder place these days. The love of a pet is a very pure one, there are none of the complexities seen in human relationships. While I didn't know Nigel personally, I can feel Monty's pain.
Monty gave a lovely interview on radio 4 today where he thanked everyone who has shown support and sent best wishes, clearly he appreciates all these unknowns who feel his loss. Nigel made most of us smile, that alone is worth celebrating and being thankful that we were able to share in the life of such a wonderful friend.
