I am sure I remember Marlorena saying she was going to get England’s Rose... I looked at it as well, particularly as DA recommends it for excellent disease resistance in his 2019 rose handbook. Some sixth sense told me it would not cope with my heat, so I didn’t get it. I’m holding out for Ivor’s Rose from Beales instead!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
...yes I have 'England's Rose'... but it's new this year and still very small... I've had a couple of untypical blooms, which I've not bothered much about.. so I will wait and see how it does..
I am becoming increasingly fascinated by the old roses, and have just come across a website which specialises in them. But what are the drawbacks to growing them, apart from probably only flowering once, because some of them are really rather lovely.
I have been plagued with rose sawfly slugs, the ones that rasp the leaves from underneath, for the first time this year. They are so cunning and tricky to eradicate. There is a limit to the time I can spend on my back peering at the underside of leaves to pick off the blighters. Leaf cutter bees are also defoliating my new Burgundy Ice but leaving the rest pretty much untouched. No idea why BI is so popular. On the plus side, less of those grey/brown spotty chafer grubs or earwigs eating the buds.
Here is the ‘best for’ page from the DA handbook for those interested. Re earlier conversations about can’t have it all, none make all three categories...

There's something for everyone among the old roses. Once-bloomers and repeaters (from occasional repeat to continuous bloom), healthy roses and disease nightmares, soft colours and dramatic colours, hardy roses and warmth-lovers... Every class is different. Trevor White is good for old roses and there is a short description of every class they have. Peter Beales also sell a lot of them, some unique to them in the UK. I personally love their "rose family" search filter.
One DA rose that doesn't get mentioned much and i took my chances to buy is Young Lycidas. I wanted something in purplish shade and fragrant and it hasn't disappointed at all 😊 big beautiful fragrant bloom. In second photo it is in front of Thomas a Becket, which is also lovely. YL needs support but i dont mind that.
