..thanks so much... edhelka... yes finding suitable plants for tight spaces has been quite a challenge, especially when planting a ton of roses as well..
..Omori... you didn't see the mess I cleared up before the pictures ... earth, gravel and dogs do not go together..
@moomywill Welcome to Roses... and you've made some great choices, which are all your own... so whilst I wouldn't choose exactly the same, there are 3 or 4 I would swop, they are yours and you should run with your heart... nice to see 'Guinee'.. much underrated dark red rose with exquisite scent... As to 'overplanting'... I'm not sure what that means... so I'm not the best to advise on that front.. I'm not sure any of us are actually .. grow them, and if they get too much, you can always remove one later, that's my advice..
@moomywill I cant really comment because I don’t grow any of those, but I personally wouldn’t choose Veilchenblau unless you really love it. I would think about how the roses will look growing together, colour-wise, that may help narrow your decision. If you want something understated you could go for the whites, pale apricot, soft pinks etc, those wouldn’t compete with each other in close quarters.
@moomywill If they are 8 feet apart, I would also plant one per post. You could do less if you want to save money, depending on the shape of the pergola, but who wouldn't love the opportunity to grow more roses.
The choice of roses is very personal, I think everyone here would choose different roses.
The question is what do you want from them. Continual bloom? Good coverage of your structure? Health? Specific colours or fitting within some colour scheme? Fragrance? Variability? Your selection at the moment has a bit of everything, which can be a good thing if that is what you want.
Hello, I’m a complete newbie to all things garden. We have a back and front garden that’s needs starting from zero. We have 3-5 rose bushes that have started growing stems but no buds as yet. One is tall. I would like to pot them before any work starts so I don’t lose any of them. Is it too late to cut them back or take them out to put into pots? Any guidance will be really welcome - thank you so much 😊
Hello Nasim, welcome to roses and gardening.. It's a bit late to do that now especially seeing as you are new to gardening, however, needs must, and if you have to do it, then so be it... they are survivors like anything else but will be relying on you... so cut them down by half or so, and keep well watered in pots, which you will have to do for the rest of the season... best of luck with your roses..
@moomywill I’m only more familiar with DA roses. You may already know this but of your choices I thought I should point out that Constance Spry is a once flowering rose, which, to me, is a huge disadvantage. The rose season is short enough as it is and to have a rose that only flowers once is big no no for me, however amazing the blooms might be (I have not seen or smelled this rose before, don’t think I saw it even at DA’s rose garden somehow even though it’s meant to be one of the early days symbolic DA rose)
I noticed you have generous gardener on your list which I do like, strongly perfumed and it is repeat flowering, and comparing it to pictures of Constance Spry they both appear to be of a similar shade of pink..
Your plants look lovely @Marlorena and seem to be quite ahead of mines even though I am located more to the south, in Surrey.
I was wondering what is that plant with pink flowers on one of your pictures? It looks so pretty 😍 I could do with one like that. Does it flower for a long time and does it like a sunny spot?
@Big Blue Sky ..thanks so much... yes I love that plant too, it's called Rhodanthemum 'Marrakech'... there is a white one with a black eye called 'Casablanca' and a buff yellow one called 'Sunset Peach'.. I have these as well... but Marrakech is my favourite... they are all evergreen, forming attractive mat ground cover, beautiful soft foliage.. they enjoy the same conditions as things like Lavender, grasses etc.. gravel gardens, full sun, sharp drainage.. ...they are Spring flowerers over many weeks, they are amongst the earliest to start and carry on for some time, but as far as I recall do not repeat later in the season... ..hope you find some,.. I think I got mine from Dobbies Garden Centre..
@celcius_kkw ..good to see you posting again Adrian... do hope you're feeling better and well on the road to recovery..
