My perennial order from Secret Garden arrived earlier, very well packaged so I'm pleased. Will need to repot them as soon as the weather improves.

@Marlorena - I had a feeling you might say Phyllis Bide, because that one popped into my head a little while after posting! I remembered looking at it before when I was thinking about the spot where Malvern Hills is now. I'm not sure if I like the colouring on it though.

I had looked at Lady of the Lake although it's not exactly the sort I was thinking of but I'm sure would be lovely there. I fancy masses of small flowers because I don't have any like that really.

Thanks @Suesyn and @edhelka those all look really nice. I like the supers particularly - they fit the bill flower wise.

...thank you...  no, it's not thornless by any means, although not excessive but plenty to snag you... average thorns as I recall..  it's the colour really, unusual in ramblers of that type..
..do you not find those Allium Purple Sensation to be weedy?  it took me years to get rid of them...

Thanks, it’s good to know it does have thorns! I wasn’t sure as the Trevor White website said few thorns.

I removed some of the weedy alstroemeria, to put in the alliums. They may just have to fight it out until I can think of something that is airy but not weedy to go in that spot. It’s a bit of a problem with mixed borders. I have plenty of geraniums, iris and various bulbs in the garden any other suggestions?

Sometimes I have grown sunflowers a bit in front of that spot and leave them as a silhouette over the winter.

@Nollie...according to the spiel their arches are constructed of 12mm solid steel, so it sounds as if they should be sturdy enough.

... as for perennial suggestions to grow with roses, there are so many, but you should consider adding these..
Aster 'Monch'..  looks nice with orange/apricot roses likes 'Lady of Shalott'..

Phlox .. these are 'Sweet Summer Purple bicolour'... 'Purple Flame'.. and 'Mt. Fujiyama'..

...here's another one for @Mr. Vine Eye
..'Alister Stella Gray'...  very similar to what you already have though...  it does nothing in the first year until late summer, then it suddenly takes off throwing up a long cane or two..  scented and long flowering..

@Marlorena - that looks lovely, I hate trying to “browse” on the DA website because it has habit of filtering out a lot of the roses - you have to already know what you’re looking for.
