I bought a friend one as a birthday pressie and hers rose buds were pinker than mine, I thought the wrong rose had been sent. Fortunately the rose was white when fully opened and the scent amazing she said. I am finding though that the longer I’ve been growing roses the 1st flush of flowers are not always the best. One in particular, Princess Alexandra of Kent, didn’t flower its true colour till nearly the end of the season last year.
Growing roses is certainly not boring for sure, they keep surprising us from one year to the next!
Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.
@Fire For that size rose you would want a minimum of 25 litres, and deeper is better than wider in terms of pot shape, because roses like to put their roots down. Forgive if you know this already but your friend would want to use a loam based compost. Keep an eye on watering, it may well need daily watering during the summer months.
..old Tea roses are early to bloom... 'Mme. Antoine Mari'... 'Marie Nabonnand'... California poppies.. Rhodanthemum 'Sunset Peach'... ..smelly... 'Vincent van Gogh' tulips.. Azalea 'Mother's Day'... taking up a valuable space for a rose.. I shall have to see about that...
@Mr. Vine Eye Regarding Scarborough Fair, I would say yes, it grows that way. Thin canes, airy arching habit, but doesn't flop and can hold its bloom. I found some photos for you so you can compare. Planted 26/3/19.
Thanks for that @Fire, you beat me to it! I just call her Julia. Very healthy @jonathanmichell23, lovely, abundant glossy foliage and blooms really well with barely a break - even in my challenging rose-growing conditions. It did blackspot towards the end of last year’s season, but few escape it entirely in my hot, humid climate.
@Bright star, I wonder if it’s the spate of good weather the UK has been enjoying? Most roses want to revert to pink with me and I do notice a considerable difference in colours in my roses depending on temperature. For example, here is Lady Emma Hamilton, decidedly pink/peachy just now (got to 29degC today):
Whereas in cooler weather she looks like this:
And when it’s unbearably hot, she looks a spotty mess!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Here's a pic of our climber harkness summer sweetheart..someone mentioned it recently I think. My favourite rose at the moment..many blooms plus also one of the easier roses to make cuttings from. 🙂
@Nollie I would go for a Julia. She seems similar in a way to Arthur Bell. (?) I had a lovely little Arthur but I gave him away Before I learnt the art of removing everything to put in roses instead.
I will get a Deep Secret for myself as well as friend.
Does anyone under-plant leggy climbing roses with bush roses or is that just ludicrous?
It's the only rose space I have left. (I find myself saying I have run out space every six months. Lol).
