I have noticed that the roses’ scent seem to have diminished somewhat in this heat.. they seemed to exude more fragrance before this weekend but when I got home from work yesterday I just didn’t seem to pick up much scent from my blooms..
It's so hard to photograph roses in this strong sun. I get up late in the morning and the garden is in shade in the evening. And I agree with the fragrance, it's often not there in this heat.
Some of the "not for everyone" roses. 'Archduke Charles', a china.
'Crépuscule', a tea/noisette climber, with allium unifolium.
'Empereur Charles IV.' more open, the photo shows the colour well.
'Alba Maxima'
'Just Joey'
'Scarborough Fair'. I think the blooms are bigger this year (its 2nd year).
And the Climber/Albrighton R., the blooms don't last long but it's self-cleaning. The irises in the raised bed are over, now it's campanula time.
@celcius_kkw Thank you I got it directly from Lens but it is also available from Peter Beales (as a new addition for 2020, although with a mistake in their listing) if anyone is tempted but only as a bare-root.
Such an amazing variety of roses on this thread, new discoveries every day and more to lust after than I would ever have space for.
I find the chameleon qualities of roses, according to weather/conditions fascinating. @edhelka your Empereur C.IV looks so different to the online photos, fuller, less cupped in shape, more intensely coloured. I was just comparing it to Ivor’s Rose on Beales website as they have both.
Here’s Stormy Weather looking more dusky purple now, almost lilac, with very frilly petals:
Still teasing, Soul - looks like it’s going to be a rather warm pink, reminds me of my mum’s lipstick!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Nollie Yes, I was quite surprised, I expected a slightly darker version of Royal Jubilee. But some of the newer photos on HMF are similar. I love HonzaPM's photos but I think his camera makes them slightly cooler... but maybe not, maybe his ECIV really is so much lighter and cooler. I think the newest blooms and buds have the pinkiest colour and the fading colour in hot sunny weather is the lighter fuchsia from the photos. The fullness of the blooms possibly depends on the amount of them in a cluster. I have small clusters (3-5 buds) at the moment but when it matures a bit, it should produce larger clusters.
I saw this beautiful climber while out walking today. It was a stunning delicate mauve colour with pink buds and old fashioned cup flowers. Sadly current rules don't permit walking up their path to get a sniff! Any ideas what it could be?
