@Nollie and @Marlorena, thanks for the feed advice. I will have to make do with tomato feed for this year. I have loads of that and no garden budget.

@bradleywood32, i am so curious but i cant see monkey. Which photo?

  • @newbie77 it's on page 91, just above the rose flower on the right hand side in the wood. The knot and markings make it look like a monkey/ape

A friend is choosing a red shrub rose for a pot.

    - partial sun
    - good for a container
    - strong scent
    - dark red
    - repeat flowering
    - by a front door

Thinking along the lines of rose Ruby Wedding, but a darker red would be great.
What's the minium size a pot would have to be for a rose to do well, would you say?
    Any thoughts please?

My roses are well behind everyone’s else’s.
Gabriel Oak - no buds. new rose this year

Sexy Rexy in among the Centrantus. No buds.

Kew Gardens - a few buds also a new rose this year

iceberg climber from Lidl - looks like being the first to bloom

Munstead Wood is now in the ground and sprawling a bit. Has just 2 buds.

Scepter’d Isle no buds but that’s in a north facing spot.  There’s a huge geum in front of it as well (didn’t think it would grow so tall, will be moved)

Sorry for sideways posts. I can’t seem to fix it.

@Fire My first idea would be Deep Secret, I used to have it in a west-facing area close to the house (afternoon sun after 2 pm). @B3 and @Omori I think have it and could advise about its shade tolerance more.

My Gabriel Oak has finally got over his snooze and started growing. Up til now he’d leafed out with short 1-2 inch growth then just sat there.

Yesterday I spotted an actual growing red stem sticking out a couple of inches from the rest!

Emily Bronte has similarly thrown out a longer stem which looks like one that will bear the first bloom - no bud yet though.

Scarborough Fair is small and weak and puny with very thin new growth - i don’t think it’ll be flowering for a long while yet. Mind you when it came it was a mass of thin canes. Maybe that’s just how it grows?
