Just gorgeous @poppyfield64 . So glad Proper job is still flowering for you, I'm not sure I'm going to have any more. What do you think of Boscobel's habit? Mine throws out 1cm diameter canes with a lovely flower towering over the shrub while other barely 3mm canes have little droopy flowers. It is healthy but not an attractive plant. Lovely scent though. Is LdeV rain resistant?
Thanks @Tack. This is my last bud on Proper Job. The last two blooms opened and then got battered by the wind and rain. If it wasn't for the fragrance on Boscobel I think I would bin it to be honest. Mine sounds like yours and I've had quite a few spindly canes with droopy blooms. For the last couple of months it's been cover in BS and has lost lots of its foliage.
So far so good with LdeV. Foliage wasn't brilliant when it arrived so hoping it will be better next season but the blooms did really well and lasted for weeks even with days of pouring rain. The first bloom that opened lasted around 3-4 weeks. They are not big blooms so maybe that helps. I believe your Wildberry is said to be rain resistant too.....how did yours do?
Hi @poppyfield64 . Wildberry is a good tough rose I think, the leaves and petals are thick. The outer petals do get marks and imperfections in the rain but the big blooms open fully and are attractive, they last too. I'm hoping for a stronger fragrance next year, what it has is nice but you need to really get into it. It is a shame about Boscobel but it is ok in the middle of a group.
..just catching up... lovely roses everyone, and everything else besides..
@Nollie ..no problem Nollie, thanks for the tag.. just to add that I've grown quite a few in groups of 3 including MW, set about 2.5 feet apart.. all good.. others, Anne Boleyn, Charles Rennie Mack,. Boscobel, Princess Anne, Little White Pet, and my favourite The Herbalist.. ..Francis Dubreuil would be good too... @owd potter
..always remember though, whatever you read that rose nurseries advise, they want to sell you 3 roses instead of 1 - great for business and that's what it's all about for them.. but it does have merit with smaller roses.. but I like to make sure I love the rose enough to want 3 of them these days.. starting with one and adding others later can be a good way to go about it..
..you can do triangular, 1 at back 2 at the front, or inverted with 2 back and 1 at the front.. also in a straight line.. ..here's 3 Anne Boleyns... centres just 18 inches apart, so they grow into one.. no need to worry about crowding.. 'The Herbalist' inverted triangle.. about 2 feet apart.. lusciously scented 'Francis Dubreuil' blooming today in greenhouse.. ..upright, angular growth..but this is first season.. quite narrow at the base.. I'd probably centre 3 at about 2.5 feet apart.. sorry I don't have a better picture..
Evening @Marlorena, Many thanks for your post and valued comments on grouping. Also from your photo of FD the colour is just what I am after, looks more reddish on Beales photos which left me just a little undecided. Great colour and fragrance, just the job... Just one other query if I may following up on Nollie's comments earlier. DA lists MW as 1.10m high and wide, Nollie gave me the impression it is smaller than this, what is your experience? I would like it to occupy and fill a 90x90 cm space as a single. Many thanks Owd
@Tack I still have a hankering for Wildberry and sounds like she's doing good for you so far. Next year maybe if I'm lucky. I'll give Boscobel another couple of seasons purely because of the fragrance but if it carries on like this then it'll have to go. It's still in a pot so will maybe move it somewhere else and see if it's does better.
Hi.. @owd potter ... your 90 x 90 cm should be alright for a single MW.. but in my coarse conditions it took all of 3 years to reach 3 x 3 feet.. I did find all my MW's quite slow to establish here.. it does throw up a taller stiff cane, very upright, sometimes.. if left on it would take the rose to just above 3 feet but I used to prune it back as it was out of place.. ..the growth habit on this rose cannot be described as graceful, it's stiff and coarse but it does seem to fill out a bit with age... I prefer Francis Dubreuil and that includes the scent too..
Thanks so much @Marlorena, really helpful and gorgeous colour on your Francis Dubreuil. I’m going to keep him in a pot at first, so useful to know it’s initial habit, it may need some initial support/protection from my fierce south-easterly winds.
@owd potter - so back to your initial choices, shows your instincts were right all along, excellent. My MWs are slow-growing compared to other DAs that romped away. I know we need to give DA roses 3 years to build up to their full potential, but they have had that long and still only 70cm, but I live in hope they will get there one day and yours may get there a lot faster.

Always worth checking things out with you folks on here though. No substitute for hands on unbiased experience from those who know.
