..just to sing the praises once again of Roseraie Ducher in France.. I've been ordering each year from them recently and not disappointed at all... their roses are first class, working out at about £19 per rose including delivery, which is competitive I think with UK vendors.. and they're so quick about it... I have found it's best to order on a Sunday, they despatch the next day, Monday, and you receive them on Friday by timed DPD Courier.. pay by paypal... everything an online rose nursery should be..
..nice colour catalogue.. ..and a phytosanitary certificate.. ..they prune the roots on some, but that's ok..
Despite having 24 new roses received/on order this year, I still have a couple on my wishlist from Ducher, it was a toss-up between ordering from them or Loubert this year and Loubert just won. I do have a spot for a yellow though and am considering either Souvenir de Marcel Proust or President Armand Zinsch from Rosiers Delbard.
We are due -5c and possibly snow next week, even in my bonkers changeable climate that is very severe for November. I am itching to receive my TCL order but probably a very good thing if they don’t arrive next week. I’m busily insulating my poly and the rose pots in it with a mixture of cardboard boxes, bubblewrap and leftover cork insulation panels 🥶

@Marlorena Interesting to see that phytosanitary certificate. Does it mean they plan to continue to offer shipping to the UK even after Brexit (and we would only pay VAT after being invoiced by DPD)?
@Marlorena I know that rose "New Zealand" as "Aotearoa," and it's beautiful. From the same breeder (Sam McGredy IV) as Sexy Rexy (a much lovelier rose than its slightly tawdry name suggests). Went down a rabbit-hole of ascertaining if it were the same Sam McGredy as the breeder of Arthur Bell (of course it was...). I missed the part where he moved from Norn Ireland to NZ in the 70s (probably because I used to tune out my mother when she nattered about this stuff). It's keeping me entertained this wintry, misty evening, so thank you. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_McGredy https://www.odt.co.nz/rural-life/horticulture/renowned-rose-breeder-sam-mcgredy-dies
I also had a really good experience with C & K Roses recently.
@sarinka ..yes Aotearoa, that's the one.. it was recommended to me by an internet friend, so I've been meaning to get it for some time.. ..McGredy was a prolific breeder... you might see his 'Oranges 'n Lemons' for sale in garden centres... I bought one last year.. ..it sounds like he made a good decision to go to NZ in the 1970's...
@edhelka ..they didn't used to include a certificate so I imagine it's to do with Brexit, in case the box was opened by customs I suppose... ..I'm not quite understanding your question about vat and DPD, as we don't pay them directly.. the tax on roses is 10 percent in France, so if the roses come to 60 euros an extra 6 euros is added... shipping is currently 16 euros for what I ordered, but that may go up if no trade deal... who knows what's going to happen in the new year..
..they have some unusual roses.. hope you give them a try sometime..
@Marlorena At the moment, when you order from a country which isn't in the EU, you need to pay VAT (on orders above £15) and import duty (orders above £150, I think). From 1st January, this should happen for EU countries too, at least we were told by HMRC to be prepared to do the export and customs declarations as it is now done for 3rd countries, and the same situation for imports. So the order sometime next year shouldn't be charged the French VAT but instead, the courier would invoice you for the UK VAT + their fee. Royal Mail does this before delivery which can delay packages a lot, most couriers do this after the delivery but they usually charge more for the customs services (Royal Mail £8, couriers usually £12 or more). I agree, they have some beautiful and rare roses, very tempting.
Brr! A frost has flattened the garden this morning so I won't be going out for a bit. Tore a thin arm on Armand Zinsch when I went out with some bird food due to an iced over bucket/thorn snagging on pyjamas combo. I'll cut it off cleanly, I'm sure it'll be fine.
Yesterday I got 2 of my new roots in the ground Highgrove and Ambassador Nogami both in the same border. H's space was dry and full of nuggets of metal and Nogami's full of clay. I got the rest of the bulbs in that border too but still have some tinkering to do including adding my potted Munstead Wood and Flanders.
It's amazing how much the soil can vary in different parts of the garden, @Victoria Sponge, or even within the same bed.
My final bareroot arrived today- from Trevor White, Boule de Neige. I'm a terrible photographer but here it is. (Please ignore the mud-tramped shed floor.) Looks fine! And this - together with Gabriel Oak- is the one I am most excited about.
@edhelka my roses from Beales came with a phytosanitary certificate so looks like growers are gearing up both sides of the channel. Having discovered the tempting French offers of Loubert, Ducher and others though, I may never need to order from the UK again. Another one I have been browsing:
@Victoria Sponge, I’m still torn between the two yellow Delbards, since you have President Armand Zinsch maybe I should go for Souvenir de Marcel Proust so we can compare notes!

...I wish all bare roots were like that... I don't know how Trevor does it... never seen a bad one from him..
