@newbie77 thank you! The garden is a work in progress, but we do live in a beautiful part of the world 😍

    Your roses are fine @Katsa
..I wouldn't be worried about any of those.. yes trim off any dead bits and the hip if you want.   I've not grown LEH so I don't know its vigour but it looks ok to me there..

..nice rose garden coming along too !..  when are you digging up your lawn ? [joking]..

Well it certainly seems luck of the draw as to the quality of bare root roses this year, or not bare root in the case of Agel-Rosen @edhelka - the latter look like remaindered potted leftovers from the summer, from different sources with different pots and labels. You would be well within your rights to reject them and apply for a chargeback from your credit card company as you have not received what you ordered.

Your Kiss me Kate is at least a decent size with a sturdy graft, about three times the size of the ridiculously puny Alexander I got from Beales, but I agree, not the best specimen either.

I got 2 from C and K Jones today... very good, it's the first time I've used them... big roots and lots of thickish canes... 4 on 'Wild Blue Yonder' [left] and 6 on 'New Zealand'..

  • They look sturdy @Marlorena, they look like sweet roses too, don't think I'd heard of them until you mentioned them recently.

@newbie77, I think you have both Charles Dickens and Poet's Wife? Do you rate the fragrance of CD above the Poet's Wife? Just curious as the yellows always catch my eye and I already have Poet's Wife (in its first year).

@Nollie I don't mind receiving pots (they don't look potbound or hungry). You are right I have grounds for not as described claim unless there is some small print somewhere that they can replace... who knows with the language barrier. Their potted roses are significantly more expensive than bare roots. The order was 56 EUR including postage, I can be happy with that.
On the other hand, Beales roses I bought have been consistently worse than from other suppliers and they charge £17.50 for a rose. That's actually more than I usually pay for a DA rose.
@Katsa They look good in the bunch. Hard to say for the roses in the ground but it looks like they have enough canes. Maybe slightly spindly but DAs are often like that, small and spindly in their first year or two. Some of them need more time to produce thick canes. I would expect them to cut the dead wood before shipping though, I guess they are really busy. I still haven't received my order (or the invoice).

Thanks all! I really appreciate the reassurance. I read somewhere that Young Lycidas was quite spindly, so that didn't worry me too much. it was more the Desdemona and LEH was so spindly and one of the canes on the LEH was dead. But given they're 8 euros, I'm really not complaining. And will wait to see how they progress.

@Marlorena - don't tempt me  :D My husband has asked the same thing and I have a feeling he's about to stage an intervention. I've still got to figure out where to plant our hops as i refuse to plant them in with roses. I have a feeling I'll be donning my old climbing harness and planting them in the ground on the other side of the fence. On the plus side that frees up two large containers ...

@Victoria Sponge, actually i have three yellow DAs. Charles Darwin, Golden Celebration and The Poet's Wife. I love yellows. They all have strong fragrance but fragrance itself is slightly different type and none are myrhh. I wouldn't rate CD fragrance above TPW. To me fragrance strength wise they are same and i like them all same.

My plants are only one year old, golden celebration throws lots of octopus canes and has worst blackspots. Charles Darwin is more compact than other two and also blackspots but less than GC. TPW is wide sprawling type and healthiest out of three. If i had to choose one plant overall, it would be TPW. Luckily i have space for keeping all.

@Marlorena I moved Gabriel Oak out of a 38x45cm pot and it was filling almost 3/4 of it after one season. On the other hand, I moved Empereur Charles IV and it had much smaller roots, less than half of the pot. I expected huge roots from La Belle Rouge (because it was big above ground) but they were also smaller than Gabriel Oak.
