I don't know what this is, it's compact and apricot coloured, but is it suckering?
and if so, presumably should I remove the sucker right to base?

@owd potter  ...yes, that's a sucker... snap it off right back to the base if you can, just under the soil surface...
..your pot could do with topping up a bit, maybe half and inch or so.. with some fresh compost.. the crown is overexposed there..

Beautiful silver coat, it’s a hard life isn’t it.

    This is also more typical...

It's dry here too and we really aren't used to it. Even in our dryest months (May, June) we rarely go without rain for more than a week. Luckily our water is acidic and soft.
I ordered some compost for tomatoes, Miracle Gro all purpose soluble plant food and some other essentials from our local garden centre, they do deliveries. They used to deliver only heavy items but now they also added other things, including plants. Free delivery over £50, you can guess how this ends :) I bought 'Eye of the Storm'.
Some photos of baby roses which I haven't shown yet:
    Gabriel Oak, Silas Marner behind:
    Blackberry Nip, a hybrid tea:
    Purple Lodge, slow-growing so far:
    Empereur Charles IV.:
    Lavender Dream, low growing, spreading:
