I have mixed feelings about this rose (La Belle Rouge, HMF link). It's huge and I am sure it's going to look awesome when in full bloom. But it has been having problems with mildew for the last month or so. And I am not used to seeing mildew here.
I believe it has been watered and fed enough. But it's a big rose and maybe needs more than my other roses. Maybe it isn't a good rose for a pot and I should give it a chance in the ground. Or maybe it is disease-prone and I should get rid of it.
'Our Beth' that was right next to it now has mildew too. I had to move it to isolate it a bit but now it is in quite a shady corner which also isn't a good long-term solution.
I think this will be a hard judgment call in autumn.
And my raised bed yesterday evening. The two potted roses are 'Our Beth' and 'Claire Jolly'. The small opening orange bud in the middle is 'Crépuscule'. On the right part of the fence is the climber/'Albrighton Rambler'. I believe I should treat this area as a large pot, feeding and watering more often.

...looking at your HMF link @edhelka
..the blooms are like red poppies... I quite like them.. I think it's a rose that needs a wildish garden, amongst wildflowers and foxgloves... something you look at from afar?, as it's quite a strong colour.. maybe it's a rose you'll never quite get to love.. I have a few of those..

Hi all, is anyone able to recommend a fragrant white Bush rose. It's for the middle of a semi shaded border. Soil should be nice and rich. If not I may have to go for a deep burgundy. Its too contrast a lot of pink in this particular area

@Marlorena Yes, it would be a lovely combination. Sometimes I love a rose in spring and dislike it later in the year, sometimes it's the other way around. But there's always the problem of making space for new roses. I know for sure some roses will have to go but I try to be openminded about it for now.

@Marlorena Not at all!! I’ve just been on my balcony for the fifth time today being all worried about my roses and I was devastated to find a large sized cane from my lady Emma Hamilton has snapped... and it’s got at least four buds at the top. I decided to cut it in half and put in a pot to try to make the best of the situation.. I hope they survive. I also spotted a thin-ish cane from Lady of Shallot flopping very precariously in the gale force wind so I tied it to a stake ‘just in case’.. otherwise I will end up with more cuttings than I can manage. Two more days to go before calm returns.. I will have to say an extra prayer for my roses tonight 😔

Same here! It’s horrendous!! Looks like I’ve lost some parts of the Generous Gardener!

Sorry to hear about everyone’s weather problems, it does seem to be getting more unpredictable and extreme every year, everywhere. It’s always very changeable here - I can have monsoon rain, high winds, soaring and plummeting temperatures all in one day! But at 31c today is the highest it’s ever been in mid May, which makes me worry we are going to have another hideously hot summer this year. I sincerely hope not!! Funny how I’m thinking, oh, no, the roses! Humans are a secondary consideration 😆

  • I see it’s not just me who has had damaged roses. Gusts have been about 50mph all day and will continue right through till Sunday! I’ve had a lot of bust canes and buds so far as well as loads of flattened plants amongst them which is what is so annoying with my garden on the verge of looking really nice!

So much damage at the wrong time and I’m sure a lot more to come this weekend but I suppose that’s gardening haha!!

Hopefully all will recover in the next few weeks!
