I can’t wait to hear from you all as to how Silas marner and the country pardon fare this season.. they’re both on my wish list for next year together with Gabriel oak..
meanwhile I’m growing tons of sweet peas as I didn’t quite realise how many I get in each seed packet!
This is just a fifth of what I’ve got.. I need to read the details of my order next time..
I have several buds showing colour but no change day to day... And it will be cold again for a couple of days. Hopefully, I could see some blooms towards the end of the next week, maybe next weekend, who knows I am checking the roses several times every day. Nothing interesting to report or photograph but everything is greener with every day, the change is visible even within a couple of hours. And it's getting dry. Maybe there will be some rain tomorrow but probably not much.
It's been very dry here the last week @edhelka - could really do with some rain! I'll have to get out and do a proper water of the garden in the morning. It's set to remain dry for the next two weeks according to the forecast.
My three March planted bareroots are all awake now and trying to push out leaves.
I found some more rose buds today on Kew Gardens and the first one on Amber Queen. I must share this photo of the Amber Queen bud as I think it's absolutely beautiful! Love the little jewel like pink blobs all over it and the green and red colouring.
It's teeny at the moment, about the size of the nail on my little finger!
@Marlorena I’ve got Painted Lady, Prince Edward of York and Matucana. All three are supposed to be 10/10 in terms of fragrance, I’m most looking forward to the Painted Lady though with her white turquoise colour.
Nice blooms @Nollie .... The Prince is an older one I think but have you ever seen 'Othello'? it's a dark red Austin that smells wonderful.. another weak grower I gather but it still sells here - not from Austins though..
@Mr. Vine Eye - I thought you must have a decent camera... please take some more macro shots any time, they are always welcome... you see things you didn't even know existed..
@celcius_kkw Adrian, I know Matucana [aka Cupani]… it does have a great scent.. you might find the stems a bit short, and later you might prefer sweet peas with longer stems for the vase.. hope they do well for you..
..you will have quite a little cottage garden going on there... I've been thinking about doing a bit of fruit and veg once again, no cottagey rose garden really should be without a couple... 2 of my favourites were the climbing French Bean 'Blauhilde'... I grew this up a Generous Gardener rose... it has long purple beans - stringless - prolific - and delicious... very decorative flowers and pods to grow with roses.. probably grow in a pot being an annual..
..my other favourite was the thornless Boysenberry.. probably not doable in a pot.. but I'd like this one back again.. the flowers are gorgeous and decorative and wonderful fruit if the birds don't get them first..
I'm off and running... this is the earliest I've had a rose in bloom in my current garden.. 'Marie Pavie'.. [France 1888 Polyantha] ..roses like these should be better known but they lack the hype and glamour of David Austins.. the flowers are small, scented, almost thornless bushy growth, and virtually disease free.. flowers all summer... about 3 x 3 established..
..part of my front garden... Narcissus 'Segovia'.. Tulip 'Greenland'... .and a bit too much white.. I shall have to move the Rhodanthemum 'Casablanca'.. 'Silas Marner' is in there somewhere.. just visible..

I have lots of buds and some colour showing too @edhelka , but mixed weather has stalled them. Two reds are in the lead...
RD Braithwaite, always one of the earliest, but foliage already looking scrappy:
Plus little Diamond Eyes, still in it’s pot but moved outside to enjoy the early blooms:
