  • Thanks @Tack. I have the same problem with Alibaba.  Gets sun all day at the front of the house.  Someone suggested to me that it may be because it's getting so much sun that the blooms are going over so quick.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for yours, it does look really lovely.

@Nollie @Mr. Vine Eye PAoK has to really change significantly with age, I have no floppiness here. But I inherited her already mature so don't know how long she needs.
This is her when we moved in (summer 2018), I would guess at least in her 3rd year. You can see thick canes. She's now wider and airier but that could be different pruning style (the previous owner pruned everything very low).
I am always amazed by how much roses change with age (if things go well). I can imagine not having enough patience with a rose like that and I am happy I inherited her already mature. I couldn't be without her even though she is disease-prone and dislikes rain.
  • @Nollie what is the gorgeous rose to the left of the photo please?

Thanks @poppyfield64 . I meant to say how fabulous your Jubilee is looking, I love the sunny centres. SH also has to improve in the fragrance department. She was chosen mainly so that everytime I lean into the tap or pass by on the path I would get a waft, if I recall SH has top fragrance awards but so far not happening. So I hope the age improvements that the others are talking about do kick in.

    Some foliage/full plant photos today.
'The Prince' for Nollie to compare. Diseased old foliage, coloured new foliage and some nice buds.
'Souvenir de St. Anne's' getting ready for the next flush. Probably my most favourite out of this year newbies.
'Reine des Violettes'. I keep reading how this needs the best soil and feeding, which it certainly doesn't have here. But I think it will grow into a monster. The plant is to train it on the railing and also some pegging on the other side.
'Eye of the Storm'. Extremely vigorous, still pushing new, nicely coloured, new growth. Some diseased lower leaves but mostly healthy.
And 'Silas Marner'. I have no idea how this rose plans to grow in the next year or two. I would love to see more photos from DA - mature plants and the growth habit. They grow their roses for a minimum of 10 years to test them so one would assume they could have done more photos... but no. I guess nice blooms photos sell better.

  • Thanks @Tack those sunny centres were a nice surprise and the fragrance is beautiful.  I really hope you get some in time with SH.  Would be such a shame if not.  But judging by people's comments on here fragrance can seem to vary from year to year or even one flush to another.

@edhelka That is my main gripe when choosing roses; pictures of a standalone plant at a stated age would be so useful. I am very grateful to HMF contributers if they give whole plant pics without other plants hiding the stem area.

I am looking forward to seeing SdeStA

@Tack - last year I did end of year pics which I posted on here to show how they’d grown in the first year. I’ll do the same this year.

Agree that although they may not be the most exciting photos for most people they are useful!

Just went back to find so I could compare! This is the Generous Gardener 1st Year in October and now. See in my head, I thought it hadn’t grown that much but it obviously has!

Mind you I only had 5 roses in the ground to photograph last year!!

That's a great idea @Mr. Vine Eye , I wish I had done this last year. I got one of those scary red basal canes on my TGG in the spring so mine is a huge plant in its second year, I see you have one there so it will take off for you now I hope.

@Tack - It did take off but in the wrong direction! Too stiff to bend back round so I pruned it right back after flowering. But yes I didn’t get any basal growth early on, it was all from the existing framework

Royal Jubilee hasn’t really gained any height but has bushed out and grown extra canes from the base
