I have seen some other people’s MW growing robustly too.. and thought I was unlucky to receive a weaker plant.. but it sounds like Omori also has similar experience..
@Marlorena I remember you bought Silas Marner and the Country Parson this year.. how have they performed so far for you? Is that the first bloom of Country Parson? I am intrigued as both are rated as suitable for windy and exposed areas according to DA which if proven right would be perfect for my balcony.
It’s raining today and my LEH blooms are crumbling further So I decided to cut the losses and bring them in as cut flowers.. together with Roald Dhal, a few English lavender and Cupani sweet pea flowers.
And Boscobel is doing brilliantly this year for me.. it’s perfume rivals that of LEH too
I wouldn’t say MW is spindly, mine have some very robust (thorny as hell) canes, but it has a very wayward, unattractive growth habit, not what one could call a neat shrub - an improved version would be great. Like many, I forgive it all it’s faults because those blooms and the fruity fragrance are to die for. My trio finally came good and have been superb bloomers for me in their third year, when its good, its simply stunning:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
I guess I consider the wayward floppy growth to be a spindly growth, kind of weakly structured, as opposed to the thickness of the canes so perhaps I chose a wrong way to describe it.
Canes are decent but the structure lets it down for me. Perhaps it needs more time than usual.
@Victoria Sponge Your 'saving area' sounds familiar I like your Tuscany rose. And it is similar here with the sawfly, it seems to be a bad year for it.
Isn't it weird how some roses do very well and some just refuse to grow and/or perform? I am not sure about the DA guarantee, it would help if the plant is bad but not if the variety is bad. I can't wait for replacing some roses, I think I almost hate them. And I certainly don't want to replace with the same variety.
Other than that, I have two martyrs to blackspot - Sandringham and Minerva. Other roses are still clear.
I agree Edhelka. I think when you’re passionate about roses, you can feel strong emotions...I’m currently annoyed with Albertine, I love everything about it except it hangs onto the old petals and then looks terrible. Is this true for everyone?
‘Jude the Obscure’ is a lovely rose. The fragrance is superb but I’m not good at picking out notes.
It is funny how you get emotionally attached to roses, I’m really rather sad to hoik out the original LD Braithwaite, it was the first rose I bought for the garden here and I credit it with getting me beyond the ‘ugh, don’t like roses, ugly bunch of old fashioned sticks with the odd lurid flower’ mindset, meaning the poor HTs marooned on municipal roundabouts.
@Marlorena, how is the overall architecture of your Burgundy Ice and how old is it please? Does it grow out of it’s thin, spindly stage to a fuller, stronger shrub at any point? @Victoria Sponge I am surprised your BI is frazzling. I actually bought it because it’s meant to be heat tolerant. Mid thirties here at the moment but no sign of stress, so far:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
...beautiful @Lizzie27 ..thanks for taking the time to show me.. it's evergreen I believe and certainly adds a nice splash of white... very pure, I wish I had the room for one.. @Victoria Sponge ..I'm delighted your Tuscany has worked out, and it looks beautiful.. it's not one you see that often either.. @celcius_kkw ..Adrian, you really don't want that ever so thorny rose... imagine it in a pot, you wouldn't want to go near it.. Silas has a good scent, but I hope it's heat resistance improves, I expect it will, but at the moment in my conditions recently, it's getting scorched..but it's a very hot garden here when the sun is strong.. Your Boscobel's are beautiful indeed.. I got a strong scent from that rose. @edhelka ...as it's the first bloom I smell grapefruit, I'm not familiar with lychee but it's hard not to like it, but there are so many others I could say the same about.. I'm told this type of scent isn't found in specie roses and is therefore a result of decades of hybridisation.. @Omori ...does it look a total mess after rain? I'm pondering whether to put it in my garden or not.. I have few places left where rose replant disease would not be found..
I'm going to enjoy Munstead Wood in the gardens of others... after all it's just about everywhere... but it won't be in mine too much longer [huge sigh of relief]...
@Watsonia, sorry for delay in replying, only just catching up on here. Unfortunately I can't remember just how old my Pink Flower Carpet is, maybe 5 - 8 years by now. I bought it to groundcover a steepish bed in full sunshine and certainly didn't expect it to reach 6-7 ft! I must say it's been spectacular this year. Funnily enough, the White Flower Carpet rose I bought at the same time is nowhere near the same size as the Pink one nor is another younger pink one near the first.

Here’s a collage of 4 different clusters:
