@Nollie That sounds very dramatic and traumatic. Glad 2 of my roses were the best survivors (but I have them because you rated them), I do hope the others recover quickly for you.
@Marlorena That Francis Debreuil photo piqued my interest. PB has it as the 3ft tea from 1894 but then I went to HelpmeFind and got lost in the comments as to whether it is 9ft, whether some countries call it Barcelona, whether or not the 1894 one had scent The original 1894 notes say it has a strong neck but recent comments and pictures show weak ones. Yours is Kordes 1932?? Intriguing.
I need to watch and see if my Bathsheba does that, at first I thought you were saying the cane was fragile , till I saw the pic
@edhelka nothing much to report on fragrance from Sandringham, definitely hoping for more with maturity.
@Tack ...the long running saga of 'Francis Dubreuil' [not]... ..the rose is a 1932 hybrid tea called 'Barcelona', but it's sold everywhere under the 'FD' name.. nurseries all over the world refuse to change it, including Peter Beales.. unfortunately the late Mr Beales, nice man though he was did make mistakes in his identification of roses, and he got this one wrong.. but he sent budwood all over the world of it, under the 'FD' name... apparently it sells more roses under that name, which sounds a bit exotic, rather than 'Barcelona'.. so they are reluctant to change.. or admit to the error even.. Beales won't admit to it, I asked them long ago..
..it's one of many roses, mostly older ones that are sold with incorrect names, for one reason or another.. what annoys many of us is that where the correct name is known, they still won't change it.. but it's pointless me calling it 'Barcelona' as it isn't sold under that name..
..this rose is strongly scented and with a strong neck too.. it does get black spot, and needs good cultivation.. I first had it some 10 years ago, and now have it again.. funnily enough, when I first bought it then, I was holding the potted rose in my hand at Peter Beales nursery, and Peter, in his wheelchair, came along and spoke to me about it, but did not correct the name... I only found out later..
@Nollie ..yes I mean to add that I'm sorry about your roses and the destruction, but it sorts out the wheat from the chaff so to speak.. I'm delighted Julia held up though.. there's not much she can't deal with it seems..
@Marlorena How interesting, thank you for explaining that, no doubt for the umpteenth time to a newbie. But it is good that if I buy FD from PB that I know it.
There is rain and rain. In normal June/July, all my roses are fine, even with occassional showers or rainy spells. This year, nothing with more than 20 petals is OK. It's the continuous rainy weather, the roses don't have a chance to get dry. Normally, only some blooms get ruined. This year, the whole flushes are getting ruined. I've never had rain problems with for example Princess Alexandra of Kent but this year, the blooms won't even open.
I grow many single and semi-double roses. They are the best for rain resistance and also less fussy. But I wouldn't want to have a garden with only these simple roses. I like nice full blooms and I am willing to take the risk with the weather if the rose has at least average rain resistance and I like all other aspects about it. I generally avoid too full roses, globular roses, roses with incurved petals (deeply cupped) and roses that get some bad reviews mentioning balling.
For example, I am not going to try Kordes Earth Angel (Herzogin Christiana, Secret Parfuma) even if the whole internet raves about it, I just see it and know it won't work here.
Desdemona has been doing great, looks healthy and had lots of flowers. First year.
Arthur Bell second year. It's done better than last year but not great. Had two flowers from it and a new one just starting now. Had a lot of blackspot and nibbles- bare from the waist downwards.
The less said about Rosa 'Remembrance' the better. I didn't really like it to start with. Ironically it's completely forgettable!
I'll be yanking it out as soon as I have a plant to replace it with. Maybe a lavender or something.
Hi thanks @Tack and @Marlorena. It certainly would be good to have more anything-goes roses. I keep looking for more Weeks roses but nothing catching my eye at the moment. I am hoping Ivor’s Rose, when I finally get my mitts on it, will be similarly tough as it has really good reports from hot climates, plus being English-bred might be used to a bit of rain!
Has anyone got Guy Savoy from Delbard? I don’t normally like two-tone roses but thought it was a good colour and the stripes were quite subtle. It is meant to be fragrant, vigorous, plus with a lower petal count it might be more weather resistant than the likes of RdeM.
