    That's bendy.
Very. Makes it very easy to train, also having relatively few thorns!

@tack, @Pianoplayer and @poppyfield64, glad that was helpful, but don’t take my scant experience as gospel! There does seem to be a lot of mystique around training and pruning roses, but actually it’s pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it.

@Mr. Vine Eye you have got it nailed with your winding and your Kew Gardens cuttings are very impressive.

Lovely Pure Poetry @Katsa. My chopped down bunch of sticks has put out some growth but it’s going to be a while yet before I see any blooms - September sometime I guess. 37.5c at the moment so most of my DA roses will now go to sleep until the autumn. Be interesting to see if my new non DAs do the same.

Scentimental looks promising @Victoria Sponge. I have very been anti-stripey until recently, but am getting Guy Savoy - a vigorous beast of a Delbard with deeper raspberry and pink stripes - for the back of a border.

  • I saw you mention Guy Savoy before @Nollie, glad you have decided to go ahead be good to see how it gets on.
I think Omori has a big bi-colour too, poss Ferdinand Pichard? They are kind of fun, I've looked at some of the bi-colour Bourbons but they are huge and I only have one big space left.

  • @edhelka thank you for the feedback.  On my arch I have only tied in canes on the outside of it so far.  As an alternative I could replace it with one of my ramblers Ghislaine de Feligonde.  Maybe that would work better.  As it's at the front of the house I'd like it to look nice.  Not sure whether to give it another season and see what it's like next year.  The plant itself is around 6 years old but I did repot and prune at the beginning of this season.

@Mr. Vine Eye that is really helpful to see on your narrow space.  I can't believe how many lovely blooms you have on it and it looks as though you could tie a bow with those flexible canes.

Hello! Just found this thread and am slowly working my way through it. See you in five weeks, when I've read it all.

I was just wondering- I have a few roses arriving in November. Where is the best place to get information about the particular needs of each rose? The RHS website? (I have ordered Eyes for You, 2 x black baccara, a  Lady of Shalott and a Gabriel Oak- though I am tempted to email DA and swap one of those for a Gertrude Jekyll!). I have a much loved Arthur Bell and a Lavender Lassie already, and an ancient pink rose that is decades old and in a pretty bad way

Which one you want to swap for GJ? Both Lady of Shalott and Gabriel Oak perform better than GJ for me. I would say dont swap these two. I dont have the other roses you have mentioned so cant comment on that.

@Mr Vine Eye, Is your Malvern Hills in a pot? It looks fantastic criss-crossed like that and I'm thinking I could copy you as I've a downpipe right in the front of the house and a big spare pot!

I don't think a pot could hold it! No mine's in the ground. All of that was one years growth. It sprang up over summer and continued growing through autumn and only fully stopped when it got to Christmas time!

I love it -  red stems, beautiful foliage with lovely colour especially when new, massive first flush and continuous flowering since then.
