I love the way that GJ is growing @rock_hen , in a sort of cone shape, that's cute. I don't know Lady Penelope but I like the formation of petals, like a rosette.
Sorry to hear your garden got trashed with the weather @Nollie. It seems we are all having an interesting summer weatherwise this year.
@Tack ...gosh I knew they were quick but that's hard to beat... I do hope you are pleased with your roses... I'm tempted to order some potted ones myself now..
..all lovely roses above... a lot better than some of mine at the moment..
Here they are, I'm very pleased, especially given I seemed to get the last Wildberry as it went out of stock immediately after I ordered. The broken off bud is a minor disappointment, it is a lovely vibrant magenta. Loving the colour of both, Heidi Klum more lilac but Wildberry's pink is tending that way. I wonder what the latter was sprayed with.
...they look good... I can't see it clearly but perhaps they were watered before despatch, and it's hard water marks?.. a bit careless with the hose maybe..
@rock_hen really envious of your Gertrude. Mine has been such a let down, poor first flush and now hardly any new growth and what There is isn't too healthy either.
Seems more than happens with the hard water here . But I'm not that bothered by it. I'm just glad the plants have flowers, buds, leaves and at least 3 canes each! @rock_hen Gosh yes that is a lovely GJ masquerading as a beautifully decorated Christmas tree.
It seems Arthur Bell doesn't like to be restricted @Mr. Vine Eye I moved mine after three poor years to a new open spot and it has romped away. It doesn't mind part shade, or being against a wall with grass a foot away from its feet. From two foot tall and one foot wide, it reached four foot high × three foot wide in 18 months, and that's after cutting back after its first flush. Its now in bud again.
I don't have many pretty blooms these days but I have other reasons for joy. Here are some foliage/full bush photos and progress stories.
This is an unknown HT (any ideas for ID are welcome) which I call very poetically 'NoID Balling Nightmare' (but I quite like her).
This is in summer 2018 when we moved in. And later in the late autumn, you can see the structure I had there to work with.
I decided to prune very lightly, against all HT-related advice. This is 2019. I actually really like the airy graceful habit.
2020, a lot of new growth, mostly thick basal canes. So it looks HT-ish again but it's very bushy and leafy. I find it interesting how a rose can change.
And now.
Gertrude Jekyll today, almost ready for the 2nd flush. It was a similarly poor specimen when we moved in. She now looks relatively happy in the pot.
And the last one is a newbie, 1st-year Crépuscule. After the 1st flush in May, it has been growing and growing. There are finally some buds and possibly flowering side-shoots appearing. I will start to train it soon.
@K67 I bought my Gertrude in march and put her straight in the ground where she flopped and looked awful with weak flowers so I took it out and put her on in a pot until I decide what to do and this is the first proper flush I have had
@rock_hen your lady Penelope looks beautiful! Have you got her in a pot or the ground? What's her scent like?
I ask as I'm starting to collect roses for all my cats (alive and dead). We have a Penelope and I've been eyeing this rose for a while. Now if anyone can suggest roses for 'sprocket' Connie (or constance) and Calina,, I'd be very grateful!
Here's Calina:
And this is Penny (Penelope)
Things are generally looking a bit sad in my garden. I'm really fighting mildew and black spot right now and in some parts of my garden all the plants seem to be struggling. I definitely will try to improve the soil in the autumn. But some roses are starting to hear up for their second (or first) flush
Desdemona is starting to take off:
And my roald Dahl roses are so starting to flower
More to come tomorrow... although is pouring with rain so not sure what the garden will look like in the morning...
