@newbie77 Thank you for the tip, I will take note of that. I don’t intend to let them grow too tall but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.. one of my window boxes was once blown off my balcony.. perhaps because it was empty at the time.. I genuinely hope nobody was hit by it.. since then I’ve never put my window box out without its potting mix.. and I made sure to add lots of grit to increase the weight.. this window box comes with a hook that fits snugly on my railing so I just didn’t expect the wind to be strong enough to unhook it altogether!
On another note, I just spotted a sucker on my Port Sunlight rose.. and I couldn’t believe I had left it to grow to this size!
I did notice this shoot that looks completely different from the rest of the plant and has a sucker looking light green colour but I didn’t trace it down properly and thought it rose from what looked like a normal basal cane before.. anyway I decided to have a look today and guess what it came from just below the graft union. I’ve taken it out.. most satisfyingly.
I hope I’ve done the right thing.. what do you guys think?
One of the buds on this rose has got a funny looking green sepal like structure emerging from its centre.. I wonder what it is?
I edited my post above to add that these are potted. But still probably too much too soon. I will leave them alone for some time, they will surely outgrow it but it is hard to guess when to start feeding again and how much.
I have a rose that was damaged during transport last year. It’s struggled ever since. I not sure how to fix it. Iv kept it well watered and have been hoping that it would send up some new shoots but this hasn’t been the case. The whole rose looks like it’s struggling and there are no buds. Any suggestions?
@celcius_kkw ..yes you did good.. a sucker... I don't usually see hooked thorns on them like you have... sometimes it's thornless... ...the bud with the odd centre has proliferated... some people like it, others don't and remove the bud... the rose may abort it anyway, and it may not open fully.. it happens.. I must say I like the criss crossing sepal arrangement..
Well done! I had let a sucker grow last year without realising it. I’d already chopped it off in spring but it must have regrown during late summer, sneakily and hidden amongst the rest of the canes. I even pruned it in late Autumn thinking it was just another cane. Only spotted it properly when growth started.
Suckers seem to be the theme of the day, with what I posted earlier.
@Marlorena, @Victoria Sponge and @edhelka thanks for your kind words about my garden photos - still some work to do, gaps to fill, others things growing far too big, but that’s gardening - never finished! I’m glad I took those photos when I did, torrential rain all day today and the same forecast all the coming week, so all the roses are now looking totally battered, with the exception of Julia Child, which shrugged it off - brilliant recommendation btw, I have you to thank for that one as well, Marlorena!
Edhelka, I did a similar thing, as I was delayed planting out my bare root/potted up roses from the poly, I gave them a very weak, similar NPK inorganic feed in the DA pots, then a week later planted them out in enriched soil. The little patio rose Diamond Eyes showed some signs of fertiliser burn and is now sulking, but I seem to have got away with it with all the rest.
Update on Susan Williams-Ellis - doing well but the blooms don’t last very long, they shatter incredibly quickly.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
I've decided to buy a bigger pot. I've just found DA's piece on potted roses, never noticed it before. So now I'm looking to buy a terracotta pot at least 45x45 as they state as being the minimum size they'd use. It's proved not to be an easy job buying one online, so I'll wait until Wednesday, when hopefully my local gardening centre will be back open. I've earmarked a couple, Scarborough Fair or Desdemona to plant in it. Which one do you think would be better, they are both suitable for potting according to the info on the website. Many thanks.
... Desdemona might prove the quicker to get established, it also has good foliage and sweetly scented on good days.. I've never seen SF in a pot, and its scent is light...
..After reading Nollie's comments, I think I'll keep Susan W-E to a pot for now...I'm a trifle disappointed the blooms don't last long... presumably The Mayflower is the same @Omori

It's fasciation, I would think. Makes my teeth itch.
