I read (or watched, I can't remember which) somewhere recently about weaving new canes in and out of their supports whilst they are still flexible. I think the article was referring to pergolas, but could I use that method on my wooden trellis without it damaging the canes. I'm thinking of the hard edges you get on a traditional trellis and any chaffing which might occur against them.

@Pete.8 yes you can - if you use soft ties or jute in a figure of eight knot, with the crossing bit of the 8 between the rose and the trellis also knotted, the cane is then not tied directly to or rubbing against the trellis but is supported on it. At least that’s what I am doing against a metal fence, as I am worried about the metal getting too hot and don’t want the canes to fry either! @Mr. Vine Eye has a great example of weaving canes in his earlier photos of Malvern Hills.

    Tantau Nostalgic HTs:

Has anyone heard of these or got any? The blooms look full and generous and I am wondering if, being HTs, they may have sturdier necks and avoid the drooping tendencies of the DA roses. I was looking for one called ‘Proper Job’ which they no longer seem to do, but there is a particularly fine looking red called Admiral:

...if you look under 'Gospel'.. that is 'Proper Job', which is just the made up UK name..

@Nollie, I just planted pure poetry AKA Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Rose ® which I ordered from Cottage Memories. As it's been in the ground less than 24hours I can't say how it performs. I'm tempted by Proper Job aka Gospel ® (hybrid tea, Evers/Tantau, 2002/12), which is also available from Cottage Memories. I may still purchase it ...

Thanks @edhelka - it took me days to narrow my choices down :D

I bought from Cottage Memories as they were very reasonably priced and had stock. As I'm a newbie I didn't want to invest in super expensive roses only to watch them die. I only have two from the Parfuma collection, but I'm also tempted by Kiss Me Kate. Just need to figure out where I could stick it :-).

Unfortunately for me, the stem broke completely off, so I can't use your suggestion - but that's a really good tip to have in case it happens to any of my roses.

Just had to go out and dead head the roses. A dozen from Celebration,  the centre blooms from the Blue for You, and the Arthur Bell has half its petals on the floor after a day of rain.🙄

I wondered if I could get some collective advice on a slow growing rose? I planted 4 DA Roald Dahl around 8 weeks ago and one of them has been comparatively much slower to develop. I wonder if there's not enough nutrients in the soil, or I needed to mix in more manure/compost into the soil when I planted it. .

Here's the sad looking roald dahl

    Here's it's neighbour:

Should I dig it up and replant? Or should I just wait and see what it does?

Ah, that explains why I was also tempted by ‘Gospel’ @Marlorena! These different names can be confusing. And of course you have Aquarelle, I was recently admiring it...

How do you find their habit, so far, Marlorena? Do they hold their heads up well?

@Katsa, look forward to hearing how yours gets on...

@Katsa, I personally wouldn’t dig it up or do anything just now as does have some new growth, just wait for a couple of weeks and see, it will probably catch up. If it doesn’t, maybe a seaweed feed to give it a boost. The only thing I can think of is if you had a rose in that spot before or it’s a bit drier there.

Thanks @Nollie. I'll leave it for a while and keep watering it. I think the soil is much drier there. There hasn't been any roses there for at least 5 years plus, so it must be soil quality. Would spreading manure on top of the soil around the rose improve things?
