Home from my coastal mini break, of course the first thing I do is check on the roses! It’s been cooler here and we have obviously had yet more rain...
Lady Emma Hamilton, usually very floriferous, but hardly anything from her this year. looking ruffled:
Golden Celebration:
Darcy Bussell, full of BS but the blooms stand up well to weather:
Can’t say the same of Rose de Molinard blooms sadly, plus this rose really does not want to grow very much for me so far, still barely a foot high:
Stormy Weather, great colour:
Gertrude Jekyll on a second flush, first time she has done this:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Princess Alexandra of Kent, not done so well in the rain. I think there too just too many petals, double on steroids, plus I don’t like how it goes peach in hot weather (remember that?!). It’s young yet, so will doubtless improve, but I suspect this is not a keeper for me:
Soul is young too and also also very double, but no rain damage this time - sorry for the awkward angle/blurred photo, the fence got in the way:
And Julia Child, say no more...
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Marlorena thanks for the tip about Jones the Rose, I’m not sure I would buy Like no Other, if it were a semi-double I would. I am in danger of over petalled double overload. I think the form of the one you linked for me, Vintage Classic, is more appealing.
@edhelka thanks for your photo of The Prince - the form of mine is so different, more an upright HT style to your shrub shape. I have mine in a pot against a wall, maybe they are both responding appropriately to their given environment? Do they do that, do you think?
I think I may have had one or two more many pages back, so apologies if any got lost...

That makes me very happy @Nollie, my brand new Julie Child is full of buds..so excited. Hmm Soul is pretty gorgeous too..or maybe Gospel
I succumbed and ordered Boscobel today.
@celcius_kkw Those Elho pots look ideal. I have a whole huge patio with convenient waterbutt access now! Which colour have you gone for? Plastic terracotta always looks very bright is this true for Elho? My patio is very light white concrete. I guess grey but concrete or anthracite?
@Nollie That's interesting, I was thinking about similarities (if I remember your photo well) Yes, upright and HTish (blooms on top of long upright stems) but with a significantly thinner stems than a typical HT and I think it will become bushier in future. But obviously, mine is shorter, probably as a result of the exposure in the front garden and also less sun and heat. All my HTs in the front garden are relatively short and bushy, I don't know if they are shorter varieties or if it is the exposure.
@Tack With plastic terracotta i try to avoid those that look shiny as it would make them look particularly artificial..
Most of Elho’s range have a matt finish which give them a stylish feel - I find that terracotta coloured plastic pots can still look quite ‘natural’ if they have a matt/ pastel finish. Definitely avoid the shiny ones 😉
@Katsa I always photograph with my iPhone XS.. It works reasonable well and it saves me having to go and retrieve my camera when I spot a good view.. And it also saves me the hassle of transferring the pictures to my phone or laptop. 😄
Yes be interesting to see how The Prince develops for both of us, @edhelka.
@Tack, I’m sure Julia will do well for you, if I could clone her in every colour...
On pots, I agree, no shiny plastic! We have elho here too, but am currently trialling a new range (forgot the name, will check when I next go the GC) with a mind to buy more for some potted roses. I have to be careful as plants can really overheat in pots. These are so light you can balance them on your little finger, but don’t look plasticky:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@rock_hen, just read back. I have HT Royal William for my Dad and DA Winchester Cathedral as my Mum was born there. I also bought DA Gertrude Jekyll as it had been my best friend's favourite rose. Every year I take some blooms up to their graves, although unfortunately not yet this year.
