@Dovefromabove has hit the nail on the head when she says that the perspective of a doctor is very different and they focus very much on saving lives which is of course only right and proper. We laymen see it differently I think. I am much more worried about businesses going bust and children going hungry than about a virus that will probably make me ill for a few days.
Only just catching up here - traumatised over having to get up at 6.20 am this morning to go to Sainsbury's 'silver oldies shopping hour'. Absolutely rammed with pensioners with trolley's full. We're relieved though that we've got enough food now to get us through another week or so - we have no-one yet to do our shopping for us. You're right @Allotment Boy, it is light at 6 am in the morning - never realized that as we don't usually wake up till eight ish!
I got up early for Sainsbury's hour too. But they hadn't had any deliveries so no loo rolls, tea, flour, chicken, in fact hardly any meat, disinfectant wipes, pasta, rice, tinned veg, baked beans. Loads of empty shelves, I gave up and went to Tesco. Much better but still no loo rolls. Will have to think of alternative solutions next week.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Lidl near us had full fat milk only, no eggs or bread , freezers totally empty except for ice cream, very little fresh meat or fish, cheese fridges were full. They did have packs of 9 toilet rolls, restricted to one pack per person. (I left them fighting over it. I got plenty last month when it was on offer.)
My delivery of bird food just turned up. The driver left it on the doorstep and shouted that he'd sign the confirmation for me then promptly drove off. Good thing he got the right house...
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Why is everyone (great British public rather than forum contributors!) getting so vexed about having no loo roll? Nobody ever died because they couldn't wipe their you know whats.
If we (OH and I) run out we'll just have to wash 'the area' using individual, washable (ie reusable) cloths. Not face flannels - probably a cut up old towel. Less convenient but it will probably be better for the environment - the water treatment plants at least.
Personally I'm more concerned that gin stocks were very low in W'rose yesterday and there were only 2 pacs of my favourite tonic. Plenty of baked beans though. Bless 'em - we W'rose customers clearly have different priorities!
Due to difficult personal circumstances (family illness 200 miles away) we've been living off freezer and make-shift meals for the last 4 weeks. Consequently, my stock cupboards & freezer have run rather low and it's been a bit tricksy trying to restock so we can exist for 2 weeks without going out if either of us succumbs to the lurgy.
Noticeable that the supermarkets are low on fresh meat and bread but our local butchers and bakeries still have good stocks. Maybe these little businesses will benefit 🙂
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
@wild edges: Wow! A whole year's supply of loo rolls! Thank you for a timely gift. As it happens, without panicking or hoarding, I am well placed for a reasonable supply.
Now, if anyone would like to make me an offer . . . . (British enterprise at its best aka the Black Market. )
Regarding the loo roll panic buying, I read a study that said that when people are at risk of infection, such as during a pandemic, sensitivity to disgust rises. People feel a greater urge to ‘keep clean’. Add to that the ‘everyone else is doing it’ mentality, and here we are...
I'm having difficulty with this 'social distancing' thing. Out filling the bird feeders, I saw the postman coming up the drive and like a fool, walked cheerily down to meet him as usual and took my package. Durrr….
On the bright side, it was my GW magazine so I've got more to read.
