In the first and second French lockdowns the limit was one hour of exercise and no further than 1km radius from home and no mixing outside the household.   Easy to understand for everyone and easy for us, surrounded as we are by off road country lanes that give us a choice of 2 55 minute circuits with the dogs.  Boring for anyone in towns and cities with just paved streets.

When those rules eased it became possible to go up to 20km from home for 3 hours max of exercise, again not mixing.   That meant we could get to the beach for a change but chose not to at weekends when there are more people about.

Currently no limits on distance but we are restricted to groups of 6 in our home or outside and must wear masks in public places including outdoors in towns and cities.  All bars, café, bistros, restaurants are closed as well as indoor sports facilities.   There is also a curfew between 8pm and 6am.

    It's all very clear.

That sounds much clearer and less ambiguous Obelixx.

Just heard a quick report this morning that Boris Johnson was found to have cycled 7 miles from home as exercise. Is it not a maximum of 5 miles or has that changed again ?
I suppose it isn't explicitly set out but I always read the 'stay local' guidance as meaning: don't jump in the car or train and go out of your area to access an open space for exercise. (Unless absolutely necessary). I don't make a habit of cutting the PM any slack, but in this instance I think it's reasonable to go on an hour's round-trip bike ride from your front door.

He might have predicted that he would be criticised though. I wouldn't get too hung up on it, it's probably his famous 'Dead Cat' strategy in action (again). We should focus on his actual failings that have led us into this mess.
@Loxley I think I owe you an apology.........I'd thought the 5 mile restriction was in all Tier 4 including London but having done The Quiz, I find I'm what is now known as a Covidiot and the 5 mile limit only applies ( or perhaps not ? ) in other parts of the UK. Boris can therefore probably cycle to Lands End ( tho not John o' Groats ) with impunity :D
Well I thought he had cycled all the way, which was how I thought it was justifiable. But No. 10 have admitted he drove there.

I think I'm satisfied that I would be OK, as an occasional treat, to drive ten minutes for a proper walk in some of the nice local woods around here, which are very quiet and away from residences. A lot of people are going to start taking the piss though, I wouldn't be surprised if visitors start descending on the Peak District again.

@philippasmith2 compare France to England alone then.  Still clearer here tho clearly there are regional variations here in numbers and severity of cases.  OH and I were told this pm that in the Vendée there have been no deaths and only a handful of cases ending up in ITU and they were flown in from Strasbourg to relieve pressure there.

They need to define Guidance and Laws,  the only law is illegal to incite a riot which I think, and maybe wrong, has always been the case.

The cynic in me thinks they want us blaming park coffee drinkers and arguing over shifting definitions of "local", and not holding THEM accountable.
