Just been and voted. The 3 ladies at the desk handing out the papers laughed when I looked at the paper and said " Hmm, Rocks and hard places spring to mind. We're all going to hell in a hand cart whichever of them gets in"  They nodded sagely,

I remember that 1970's strikes all too well @Obelixx and do not wish at all to back to those awful days. I had a baby and a toddler then and the electricity shutdowns for hours each day, bus strikes, coal strikes, you name it, we had it. Today's youngsters have absolutely no idea what was inflicted on us. Interest rates on our first mortgage reached over 20% and we were on the breadline.

I can never understand why folk think that the only alternative to the status quo is to go backwards.
Is it really beyond the wit of politicians to learn from the mistakes of the present and the past and move forward?
The Tories had mortgage interest at 17% in the early 90s, just sayin'

I remember that, Lizzie. We bought our first house and the last fridge for sale in New Malden. The shop was empty because of the steel strike and the 3 day week. But that fridge lasted for over 30 years. People were buying loads of loo rolls, and cooking oil because an oil shortage was announced but it was fuel oil not cooking oil!

Possibly because our political masters are currently offering us a choice of a rose-tinted version of the 1950s or the endless summers of the 1970s. Forward looking members of the main parties are being drowned out (or drummed out) by the faux nostalgia.

Brace yourself for a country more divided, bigotry more openly voiced and the disparity between rich and poor widen immeasurably.

I’m watching BBC World News. There seems to be a strong vote for conservatives.
