OH has to travel to the UK and back every month for work. Concerned about the ever-mounting air miles and subsequent environmental impact, we looked at the the train alternative. It was, on average, three times the price and therefore economically unviable. I’m sure it’s similar in the UK. Without the investment in accessible, affordable rail travel, even for those of us that would like to reduce our footprint, it’s just not going to happen.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Yep ... it's much cheaper for the two of us to drive from here to Cornwall and back than to go by train ... even including a cheap hotel overnight. Ridiculous ... immoral even

Possum can get a scheduled flight here for Xmas if she books it in July - loads of French working in and around the EU and Nato and European HQs of big business and lobbyists in Brussels and no Ryanair - but that's been too soon to know when she could get away for the last 2 years - even as a student - so she's caught the train.
This year she's taking a bus from Brussels to Nantes - cheaper and no changes so no hauling her big case and PC bag and the rest for all those changes of platforms or crossing Paris on the Metro with no escalators or lifts at Montparnasse. It'll take all day but she can sleep and it's cheap. Poor thing is doing a 3 month internship for her masters and is exhausted. Just wait till she has to work full time!!

They've been talking about reinstating the rail line up here for 20 years now but funding never allows it. Meanwhile money from Europe has help expand the road network massively and yet the buses are still very poor.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

...I know you posted on a different thread, but I thought my reply fitted better here....
Really? Boris getting into power makes you
happy? I've always voted Tory, but this bunch - and 'just get it done' -
Noooooooooooooooooooooo. 'Just get it done' when it was the current
Conservative front bench that stopped it being done in March? The
Conservat party that 'sacked' 20 of the reasons I would vote
Conserv? The Conser party that actually tried to stop democracy in this country by proroguing Parliament for 5 weeks? The Con party that tried to con the electorate multiple times by faking 'news' and web sites? The BORIS who refused to be interviewed?
Doesn't the Conservative Party stand for integrity, law, order and the 'right thing'? Do you see any of that in Boris and the bunch that surrounds him? Isn't he the Anti-Conservative? As it's pantomime season - I will now booooooo and hisssssssss.
I think if my local ballot paper had an amoeba and a conservative this time, I'd have to go for the amoeba (but only if it did an interview with Andrew Neil first...).
I can't believe people are actually considering voting conservative this time. After all the lies and u-turns on every policy they made, with Boris the most incompetant politician ever in charge who has a track record of making terrible decisions and wasting public money throughout his career. Their manifesto is dire on many levels, they have no MPs with any integrity left and above all how can you trust them not to further erode democracy after the last 12 months? They led us into this Brexit mess and have proven they can't get us out of it multiple times now. They're an embrassment to the country.

Weinstein. How is this man getting away with this? Not quite sure I follow why the women wanted money rather than the satisfaction of the b******* being locked away for n years - but even in the payment of the money, his company's insurance is footing the bill.
Apparently people want Johnson as PM 'so we can get back to normal'. Well if people are happy that lying is the 'new normal', almost half of people claiming disability benefits have attempted suicide, that food bank use has increased ~2,400%, homelessness ~1,000%, rough sleeping ~1,200% and 780 libraries have closed since the Tories came to power then I despair. And with the infamous 'page 48' of the Tory manifesto to consider, the rule of law and the constitution are also under threat, so that's something to look forward to, eh?
