Not sure that 'presided' is the right word. Isn't the implication of that word being that they had some control over what happened, when they didn't? The crash happened around the world irrespective of the colour of the governments in place in the individual countries. Even the aftermath of the crash was largely out of their hands - if they hadn't bailed out the banks, then there could have been a domino effect - and either way, people who were not responsible for the crash would have carried the can - either through the recession and austerity that followed or through losing their money/property/businesses etc had the banks been allowed to collapse. And it's a moot point as to what a widespread crash would then have done to western commerce. How could you know you were going to be paid for goods or services provided? The whole western structure is based on that promise that used to be on the pound ('...I promise to pay the bearer...' ) isn't it?
What scares me is how warped my perception of the world must be. How can I see things so differently from everyone else? How on earth has a man who tried to stop democracy persuaded Labour supporters to vote for him?
I was wrong on Brexit (or at least on the 'losing' side) as well. I really and sincerely hope that I was/am wrong on what the impact of both Brexit and Boris in power will be. I may be looking back in 5 years and saying '...well, that wasn't so bad was it?...'.
I see they've rebranded themselves " the people's government" so , if one disagrees with them, does that make one " an enemy of the people" ( as used by Hitler and The Daily Hate Mail ) They're also banging on about " One nation conservatism" . Methinks the Scots disagree.
For the past 3 1/2 years nothing has happened in Parliament because of the Brexit impasse. Now at least progress can be made and, hopefully, subjects which affect the population more on a day to day basis can come to the fore.
Some of us will go on the just desserts diet in January . The voters who switched to Johnson are the most likely to be affected by the neglect and greed of our new government. I'm assuming gove , pratty and Lord Snooty will emerge from purdah now. After you with the sick bucket Hosta
The only snag with that is is that any country's prosperity is based on its trade (or natural resources) - and the services it then provides are based on its prosperity (or should be). So they go cap in hand. Boris now has to secure a deal with Europe - we'll only know in another year (according to the Conservatives) what that deal is and what its impact is.
I am not at all convinced by a trade deal with the US - mainly as Trump hasn't completed any since he's been in power - but has launched a trade war with China - stopped elections to the arbitration board of the WTO...
