I've just come back from a garden club visit. I went with my friendĀ from the village. We visited an organic farm with free range chickens for meat and eggs, pigs and a market garden. It's run by a youngish French couple who bought an old farm and changed their careers and life style. She used to be an accountant. They grow loads of varieties of tomatoes, outside and in a huge polytunnel, also courgettes, squashes, leeks, onions, garlic, potatoes - lots of things and soft fruits, which they sell to restaurants, online and in their farm shop. They aren't too fussy about weeding. The outdoor tomatoes had loads of big weeds and the man said the weeds kept the tomatoes moist and cool when the temperature are in the late 30s.
After that we went for drinks and nibbles at a garden club members house.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Good morning allĀ āļøĀ ive been sitting watching the sky get lighter ... itās still twenty minutes until sunrise but watching the trees and houses slowly appearing out of the blackness never ceases to be entrancing ... our streetlights donāt switch on until 6am at this time of year.Ā @Busy-Lizzie that sounds like a fascinating visit šĀ

Morning all/afties Pat. How's things with you both? We have the sun back @Hostafan1, but the wind and rain woke me a few times through the night. Think we're getting the remnants of the hurricane tonight. We moan about our weather in the UK, but really - we get off so lightly, when you see what these poor souls have to go through.Ā I'm not sure when our lights go on and off @Dovefromabove. I've never really thought about it, and I havent been leaving the house as early as I used to. I think ours stay on 24 hours a day.Ā Wonder how doc's stings are today.Ā
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Our streetlights go off at 12/1am and back on at 5/6 depending on whether weāre on BST or not ... but as theyāre light sensitive as well that means that they donāt come on in the morning for a large part of the summer. Ā However the street lights on bus routes are on 24/7. It seems to work well. Ā I remember way back when I lived in a small village the parish council did the sums and found out that it would be cheaper to turn off the street lights and provide every resident over the age of 16 with a good quality torch and an endless supply of batteries. Ā I was up for that but sadly the majority Ā of the village didnāt agree. They seemed to think that it would attract burglars and muggers ... but my reasoning was that if it was pitch dark the neāer-do-wells would also have to carry torches and thus only have one free hand for malfeasance which would surely impede them ... and if they were fleeing from the police while carrying a torch theyād be pretty easy to spot.Ā
