I don’t use FB nor any other social media, can’t stand it personally, but if I had been around when this was being discussed, I would be in favour of a like.
I have looked through some of the Rose thread, and Garden Gallery, and so many posts get zero acknowledgement. Those types of threads are ideal for a like button, where people can’t be bothered to type even a short comment in response (that isn’t a dig, clearly very few people are likely to do it whereas I bet they would hit a “like” to show appreciation and thanks for sharing).
Having read through this thread, it’s bizarre to me that a like button has people calling others “saddos”, and other rude posting (on both sides)...seems like the trouble is coming from certain people arguing whether or not there should be a like button, and it turning personal, rather than actual issues from having it.
Reddit has a dislike button. It doesn't cause WW3 but it does encourage a sheep mentality. Sometimes posters get ganged up on. So, when you get those puffed up massive "liked" posters, you also get those who feel disliked. The like button does seem to influence how people feel today, which I think is a sorry state of affairs and would rather avoid.
@Lyn, the other forum that we both do has a like button, it works well there, but this is a much bigger forum. I don't remember that everyone agreed, I wouldn't have done, I was having Internet problems then so I may have missed it being discussed.
I am starting to feel a bit victimised for bringing this up. Someone said I was a "saddoe" on another thread. It was only a suggestion because a couple of people said they would like one. Even Dove who I've met and I like has been quite strong about it and I thought, Lyn, that we were friends on the small forum. Punkdoc hasn't been very kind either, apparently I have no sense of humour, but then that was another thread too. I'd always respected his views before.
Thank you to those who have supported me in this suggestion and been kind about it.
We are friends Lizzie, of course we are, but our site is made up of about 12 close friends, we all know each other well enough not to get upset about anything and I still look in a few times a day to monitor that no one is feeling left out or upset about anything. Only once or twice have I deleted a part of someone’s post in case it upset someone else. You know the effects of the like button on some social media, if someone doesn’t get a like they take it as a personal insult, we just didn’t want that to happen on here. I had no idea it would have escalated as it has, it’s obviously something people feel very strongly about.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
What's not to like about pictures of beautiful roses? The like button seems redundant to me.
I would love to look in at the lovely roses, wildlife and garden photos, I can’t because of slow internet and too large photos, I just get chucked out of the site, have to wait and then reload. Shall we start a thread about having reduced photos only on here so us slow interneters can view them. 🙂

..... Try going into the local pub and sitting on the stool at the end of the bar where Jimmy always sits. It's much the same.
Perhaps that's what I meant by 'sense of community' @raisingirl ... I'm very used to village pubs
I do hope, Dove, you didn't take my comment as a criticism of you! Not in a million years, was that intended as such. It was a statement of an observation. You're one of the most kind, helpful and positive people I've ever come across in my life and I thank you sincerely.

A worrying thought when one of the most famous and outspoken social media users in the world has access to an actual WW3 starting 'dislike' button.
