It's particularly if a thread is very busy and there are a lot of posts - pages move on quickly, it can seem as if things have been lost - a thanks or like button is just a nice way to show that you have seen something and liked the contribution.
I've used lots of forums, large and small, Ive never had the sense of people taking it competitively. I just think it's a pleasant thing to have.
I think @Mr. Vine Eye makes a very reasonable and persuasive case
I used to dislike the idea, but I've changed my mind. Social media has been around a long time now. I think a Like button would be OK on here. We're mostly grown ups, and the way to avoid the competitiveness if it happened would be simply to not join in, same as when other petty stuff happens. A competition fades away if only one person is competing. And that's the worst case scenario - I suspect it wouldn't happen much if at all. So the usefulness of being able to quickly acknowledge a post without needing to add a comment (or add yet another post) would outweigh the cons, imo.
I’ve often thought I’d like a “like” button on the forum, I’m on Facebook and have never encountered any competitiveness. I don’t remember being asked for any opinions on the redesigning of the forum @B3, I think only a few of the members who post more frequently were involved in the redesign.
@Nanniemo agreed, so here's a like for your comments
I also wonder about the motives of those expressing fears about 'competitiveness'. Perhaps some people like being a big fish in a small pond a bit too much and are worried they won't get as many likes as they think they should. So for their own reasons want to stop other people having that option
Personally I think a bigger pond with a wider range of contributors would be a good thing.
A bigger pond and a wide range of contributors is great. This forum has grown and grown since the ‘revamp’ and that’s great ... it’s a return to the cliques, sniping and unpleasantness is what I fear. There had been very little of that on this new board the way it is.
Already on this thread there are remarks about ‘big fish and small ponds’ and questioning the motives of folk who have expressed a view. ☹️
Everyone is is entitled to their own point of view ... I expressed mine. It’s not my forum and if I want to take part I have to accept the decision of the editor and that’s fine by me. 😊

Nonsense. Not everyone is on Facebook. OK, there are some posters who post too much and get in on every thread but the majority don't. "Likes" would destroy this forum as it is because.. we like to be kind and old fashioned. It's like saying thank you to the bus driver when you get off his bus.
what I can't understand is why people who don't like it don't just leave and nobody ever explains that. I belong to other groups, mostly Facebook gardening and wildlife group. If I don't like them I leave. I don't make a fuss or try and change the group, I just go. I have no wish to influence how a group is run, I choose those that I like.
Well I’ve no wish to argue about it, that’s not why I commented, but I don’t know how to use the quote function & would appreciate it if someone can enlighten me on how it’s done Tia 😊

Who are the posters who 'post too much'? If I am one, ignore me. Some conventions have become prevalent between people who only react online. Emoticons limit expression, but they are quick and easy but words do it better. I get the impression that a small number of people had a disproportionate influence in persuading admin not to include a like function in the past.
@Daniel Haynes time for a review in my opinion
If I could have liked your post to show support for your comments, I would have done
