    Dreadful idea, as can be seen on another gardening forum. There are some here who want a popularity vote but why? In reality, it is a forum about gardening and advice from all over the UK and what one poster likes, another will find to be a disaster for their growing environments and location.

    Like or thumbs up thanks buttons tend to create factions on forums, bossy sorts who only have each other to talk to in the end. The silent majority feel hurt due to their being ignored and leave. Absolutely no to like buttons or thanks from me because I have seen too many forums get cosy and fail because of it.

    That surprises me Purplerain - must be some very odd and petty people on those forums.

    I can only imagine that there must have already been problems in those groups that went far beyond a simple 'thanks' button!

    @Mr. Vine Eye that is what happens unfortunately. No matter how informative the post, that poster won't get a like because they wrote something disliked in the past. I am surprised that you are surprised because that is human nature on internet forums and always has been. A like or thanks key is a bad idea on this forum because most people do take the trouble to press a few keys and communicate with other posters. I think that is why it is so popular as opposed to other gardening forums.

    If you are really grateful, is it too much effort to actually say thanks?
    What if I posted a photo that I was really proud of and no one 'liked' it?  I'd rather look at 'views' and assume they were suitably impressed.

    I can't do @ for anyone who has a gap in their name either.
    @Singing Gardener
    I just created this link to me by typing "singing" and waiting for the drop down which let me choose between "Singing Gardener" and "Singing Hedgehog". I think if you type the space then it doesn't work.

    That's right, no space.

    Over the years we have had some serious problems on here, due to a very small number of unpleasant posters.
    I think that the changes proposed are only likely to increase the problems.

    Does this add anything?
    Who agreed, this might be important?
    Why did someone like the post?

    @Busy-Lizzie. When you try to tag someone, do you wait for their name to come up in the box? Or are you trying to type out the whole thing?

    This forum doesn't need a like button to start an argument :)  I see little huffs creeping in here already. It's just a forum. If you like it stay, if you don't, leave. Simple really. I often clear off for while when things get childish
