  • I agree @Allotment Boy they are a menace! They go after my carrots and beetroot too. There is little sign of slugs this year, but woodlice are abundant!

Hello , finally got to allotment after a couple of weeks away and not to bad

Runner beans still standing but tied a wigwam to a very stout central pole as they usually get blown over , most of the beans to big , just enough for dinner tomorrow, however , I’m going to try just eating the beans , which somebody on hear suggested

Took all my spent compost from greenhouse tied up yesterday and spread on one small bed and the rest in compost bins

O/H harvested carrots 🥕 , cabbages , squash and few strawberries & raspberries
Never had strawberries this late in the year

Also a load of quince , unfortunately we don’t like quince jam , find it to gritty , so o/h put it on free cycle web site and already they have been collected

Was hoping to spend Sunday at allotment but at the moment heavy rain due !

    Autumn well and truly hear
  • I have confirmed to the committee that I am giving up the half plot and will concentrate on my main one. Lots to do to clear everything, I want to move a small shed to the main plot. I  did consider leaving it as it's not exactly top quality but when I  looked at prices of a potential replacement,  they are just ridiculous now. So I  have been busy stripping out the old one, some of the guys recon they can move it in one piece, to save me trying to dismantle it completely.  It's been done before, hope they are right.
One bonus when I started to clear the pumpkin and squash foliage I found another two butternut,  and a crown prince.  Lots more to do, this heat and humidity isn't helping, why do I always end up having to do the heavy work when it's so hot and sticky???
One advantage of the heat tho, the outside tomatoes are still cropping , and I  picked a handful of raspberries today.

@Allotment Boy , best of luck with the move
Have been concentrated on sorting out the garden at home , nearly finished , so will move onto allotment
Had a real problem in getting garlic and winter onions from garden centres , seem to be concentrating on Christmas 🎄 stuff
Used to get those items from Wilkos , might use Kings seeds via post

Have I left my carrots too long? These are the worse affected , but all have at least one patch, do they just need to be binned?

    @purplerallim , personally I would bin them

@purplerallim yes sadly I have to agree by the time you cut out all the bad bits,  there would be very little left.
@GWRS I  liked Marshalls seeds for onion and garlic , when I was able to grow it. Unfortunately the white rot fungus is rife on our site now so it's not worth the effort.

Yesterday at allotment , got beds ready for garlic & winter onions
    As ever some pruning
O/H stained one of the sheds
Picked some squash’s not very big but ok
Also carrots 🥕 which are still ok , dug up a couple of leeks , looking good
  • It's ironic, now I am giving up part of my holding, I  have been at the plots far more recently.  I  am officially off the half plot now, the shed was relocated for me on Saturday but I  have lots to do now to sort out all the "stuff " and make better use of the one plot I still have. It will seem odd not going down the path to the other spot, but it makes sense to do this for the future.
