Likewise. My neighbour owns the fields in front and behind my cottage. About 15 years ago he began constructing what I thought was the scaffolding for a barn. Wrong! It eventually turned out to be a climbing frame for teenagers, who only went on it for a few days after it was completed. I now have to look at the ugly scaffolding skeleton from my window. The chicken house/garden shed and fencing my neighbour constructed in the centre of the field have totally disappeared under grass, brambles and willow saplings because the fields have never been cut since they were purchased so I have a constant fight to keep the grass and weeds etc. from invading my garden. The only consolation is the fields make a wonderful undisturbed wildlife habitat.
On Thursday picked our first lot of gooseberries Looks like the broad beans are coming to an end soon , been a a good crop
The plot opposite mine is a junk yard , plot holders notice to quit ended on the 30th June , so our committee will need to order a skip and get it cleared which I’d be pleased to help with
Looked at harvesting the gooseberries last week but decided to give them another week to ripen so will harvest tomorrow, my broad beans have been a bit random this year some pods have been empty or only one or two beans, the pods also seem to be growing slowly usually I reckon them to last three weeks, the first week the beans are small and tender, the second week ideal size and the third week starting to go over but this year they have stayed small for several weeks and look like lasting for a few more before getting too big.
It’s our Village Produce Show next Saturday , will have to decided what we can put in the Veg & fruit section , not going to be much I think O/H always does baking , preserves and craft bits
I am into the third lot of Broad beans. The climbing French beans are just getting started as are the courgettes. I have re-sown beetroot and dwarf FB after poor germination & growth of earlier batches. Need to sow more rocket and raddish for succession. Raspberries and loganberry nearly over already, colour showing on blackberry 😱- utter madness, looks like we will have no soft fruit to pick in September again as it will all be finished. 😡
Hello , didn’t enter Village show as we both tested positive for Covid , getting better
Been to allotment today and filled up our 3 water cubes , can’t remember do so much watering O/H picked red & black currants , josterburys , gooseberrys and summer raspberries ( have now finished ) for jam making Gave the Jureslum Artichokes the Chelsea chop And few more jobs
@purplerallim thanks for email , pleased to say covid not been to bad , so pleased we had the jabs Somebody on our allotment site was a real anti vaxer , when they came down with it they where seriously ill for 3 weeks and took another 2 weeks to get better
Your picture reminded me , we have just picked our first cucumber 🥒,they are finally growing well & 4 tomatoes
My was wondering if any of you could offer me some tips on growing aubergines?
I have Listada and white Casper - my question is mainly regarding the advice to punch out the growing tip once they reach 30cm in height - some other sources say to get rid of the side shoots..
secondly how do you support your plant? Do you use a single cane or trellis..? If I punch out the top then I would expect lots of side shoots and surely they won’t be able to all be supported with a single cane..?
I've only had the mini variety of Aubergine @celcius_kkw so minimal knowledge. That seems very short to nip out to me, even full grown they are not big plants. I used one short bamboo cane on mine, it was all they needed. Found that year the greenhouse wasn't hot enough to do them justice, so haven't done them since. Hopefully they will love this heat and grow well for you.
