Tuesday and Wednesday erected post and wire netting to protect sweetcorn and pumpkins from the muntjac deer, the wire is about 3ft tall so I will add nylon netting to raise it and cover over the top as last year the deer jumped in to the sweetcorn and trampled down 25% of it. Planted the pumpkins, cucumber, courgette and sweetcorn, visited the plot this morning to water and pick lettuce, peas and strawberries. I see that Monty has only just sown sweetcorn I'll look out to see how that goes.
Picked strawberries, Cucumbers, spring onions, and radishes today, while potting up the four roses we got as anniversary presents. Hubby is making a cage to keep cats off the raised bed ( it is NOT a cat litter) but have lost some carrots and beetroot to the bl!!!!! cats!
What is it with growing cucumbers in my greenhouse. Every year its the same the right hand side looks healthier, but the left hand produces more fruit.🤷♀️ They are the same two varieties, one of each each side, grown together, planted in new compost/tubs. 🤔
I grow cucumbers outside and seem to get ok results, I did grow them in the greenhouse once and they turned bitter I think they were the variety Telegraph but not the all female flowered variety. On the plot today I was weeding especially around the gooseberry bush to let air and light onto the fruit, I also thinned out the apples and pears to encourage bigger healthier fruit, fingers crossed! You wouldn't believe it but I have been sewing sections of scaffold netting to make little pockets to cover individual apple and pears with to stop the bugs/birds damaging them especially the pears as the Muntjac deer eat them before they are ripe, what am I like!
The trouble with outside @barry island is finding something/where that is tall enough and can take the weight, these plants are over six foot tall and have produced over 20 cucumbers in six weeks!
Picking apples this early @GWRS 🤔 or do you mean thinning. I have picked a punnet of summer Raspberries today too. Don't think the strawberries will last much longer, we have had alot of large fruit this year. Will have to make an early batch of veg soup to use some of the multitude of cucumbers we have.
