@i was that child too, I was brought up on a farm and my dad had a veg patch about 50mtx80mt. Big enough to use a small tractor and plough on a decent sized area every winter after applying masses of cow muck straight from the source 🐄🐄🐄🐄. He hated it and gained no pleasure at all but was a must to feed a growing family. We were press ganged into helping and generally were equally unimpressed with our roles. It's taken many years for me to get back to gardening and now can't find a better way to spend my time
  • I never had a garden until I got married,  and then never grew veg until I was thirty, so very much a novice . 😁
  • Went to plot harvested beetroot - bit small for this year think they were swamped out by other plants - dug over one bed as nice and sunny today
then in garden harvested 2 buckets of 1st early potatoes have not managed to get to yet one bucket potato casablanca not so good very small amount, bucket 2 better 655g potato Abbott

@celcius_kkw the horse poop that I collect is well rotted - after using on ground later on you still end up with stinging nettle weeds as horse eats them - easy to dig out if smaller.
The lady puts it in the large pallet compost bays in her field makes it easier for her to know which one to use and all that collect it, she advertised think on freecycle or gumtree that is how we found her

  • Went to plots yesterday harvested cabbage and beetroot.  Given a fermentation kit for Christmas so I am going to try making sauerkraut,  it's supposed to be easy, we will see.

  • @Allotment Boy I can confirm it is pretty easy ( or maybe I just had beginner's luck). I just used a sterilised glass jar , cabbage ( mix of red and green) ,salt , and mustard and caraway seeds for flavour.( plus some additional brine solution because I was paranoid about the cabbage not being submerged, turned out un-needed).
Kindness is always the right choice.
  • Ok thanks I will let you know how it goes.

@Wilderbeast My allotment has a road name.. but it’s a road that is split in the middle by a patch of woods which are not vehicle accessible.. it would take some explaining to the delivery person which way to come so they don’t get stuck at the wrong end of the road.. it would be much easier if I could iust send them a dropped pin on google maps.. but then I don’t know many delivery drivers who use google maps for work.. or at least be willing to provide that service..

@Gardengirl.. Thanks! I will keep a close eye on gumtree. Do they stink up your car though..

Hello , been to plot today , a bit cold only 1 degree
Cut down Jureslum artichokes , now have a huge burning 🔥 pile
Put grease bands around fruit trees 🌳
  • I put up some  new support for my second blackberry clump. The main one is supported on a square framed trellis.  Then cleared some persistent weed from underneath, emptied out the ash from the burn tank (old water tank with holes in), to put round the base. Had an attempt at a fire in the newly emptied tank but the material was too wet to really get going, might dry out enough to burn properly next time.  We have had a good delivery of wood chip from the tree men so we have been top dressing some paths and areas surrounding some of the beds.

  • Hi Gardengirl,
sorry for the delay in reply. You mentioned in reply to my last post

Your plot looks a good one, great you have chicken muck to use that should help, where abouts are you? how many plots on your site?

I'm in South Lakes, Cumbria. My allotment is private and has another 3 plots on it. I'm lucky as it's really well cared for and has a communal shed where all the tools are stored, water collected and advice from experienced allotment holders. They're all intrigued as to how a no dig approach will work so it's a bit of an experiment to be honest. x
