  • I must check the seed packet of my Ozark tomatoes. I thought they would be "ordinary" sized fruit but the way they are growing it looks as if they are going to be beefsteak size. The plants are rather thin and weedy against the Cocktail Crush and Big Mama. All growing in the same compost and pot size.
For many years my preferred runner bean choice has been Enorma. My son in law gave me some stringless Princess Diana plants to try this year. Not impressed, is it the season? They are thin and weedy in growth, yet to see any beans set.

I think it's the season,  both my climbing French and Runner beans are very thin and weedy, runners are just trying to come into flower.  The direct sown, dwarf French beans are looking OK but they are very behind where they should be.

I  have a confession,  I bought two strips of lettuce plants today. I have more seedlings just pricked out, but those in the ground are going to run to seed well before these will be ready.

  • I sowed some radish and spring onions in a trough at the beginning of the season, the radish have already gone to seed, no crop, and the spring onions are still only 2/3 ins tall. My onions look like  pickling onions, no idea if they will bulk up into proper onion size. I guess I will have to pickle them and buy in for cooking. My courgette plants are tiny, just constantly producing male flowers, nothing set yet. The Cut and Come Again lettuce are only just starting to develop enough foliage to allow me to start cutting from them.
The months rain in one day yesterday should help things along, hopefully.

I made another dash to plots in between rain showers.  Took out a short row of lettuce that were all running to seed. Sowed some Florence fennel in its place. Planted out the bought lettuce. So appart from that,  just picked a few crops.

Still picking summer Raspberries,  and the Autumn ones are just starting to plump up. Tomatoes are just ripening now, with one of each variety picked, there are four.
Keep doing a bit, but it's hard work.

I try to get to plots at least every other day, but I don't do long sessions often now. I  am getting early spuds,  cabbage, cucumbers,  salads, and tomatoes ( the reds are just getting going) a few peas but still no French or runner beans.  I am also picking blackberries,  far too early in season but a least I'm getting them this year last year they all "cooked" in the near 40 degree heat.
