@celcius_kkw … Adrian... I love the blooms on Munstead Wood, and it's a continuous bloomer in my garden after 3 years, dark cherry red at this time with that gorgeous scent... but it does have two issues.. it's excess of thorns and very stiff canes, however this shape does improve with age, when it becomes more rounded.. these are shrub roses but sometimes need propping up with a cane or two.. but I don't like to interfere too much … look forward to seeing what you've done with yours ...
Hi Marlorena, I bought a rose a few months ago that was meant to be orange sensation but clearly isn't as its pink. It's sweetly scented. Judging by the retailers offering I think it might be Prima Ballerina a hybrid tea. I wondered if you could help confirm this. Thank you!
..yes looks like it... long time since I had that one... you've been very unlucky getting so many wrong roses this season...although I would be thankful of this one... @Ffoxglove
Thanks @Marlorena. I know, I do seem to have been unlucky and I'm still trying to sort out minerva with bakker (although I treated myself to a cheeky Ebb tide rose I saw in morrisons to tide me over) I really like the looks of this rose actually and I'm quite glad I got it and not orange sensation as it goes better with the colors I have. Every cloud...
@Marlorena So as promised I’ve taken a picture of what I’ve done to my munstead rose: I’m still not pleased with the shape but given the odd long cane has lots of buds at the top I’m reluctant to prune it down to the height of the rest of the plant.
@celcius_kkw I wouldn't have done that.... it seems you are trying to grow a shrub rose, which that is, as a hybrid tea... stiff and upright... doesn't work, and it's best to allow these roses to just flop about, which they do when young, and develop their own habit... eventually it will become more graceful than present.. .... your rose is not enhanced by those canes, some of which don't appear to be necessary in any case...
@Marlorena thanjs for the advice, I guess I should just them flop. I’m just slightly concerned that they waver a lot on my terrace because it gets windy on the 8th floor.
...yes I can see you're a way up there... it just looks as though you're having a tussle with your rose and it's not working out... DA roses are expensive to buy, and people get caught up with the hype.. they are not for everybody and do not take to a more uniform look.. ... I think you would be happier looking at the smaller hybrid tea, floribunda, and patio class of roses... I feel these would be more suited to your location and perhaps what you are wanting from your roses... something to think about maybe.. meanwhile... enjoy the scent from your Munstead Wood.... I wonder if it dissipates on the 8th floor...
@Marlorena I’m after scented roses really. Most patio roses don’t seem to have any scent so they’re not really for, that said I do have two that I bought when I first stared out on this rose journey.
I sort of do like a more uniformed look in my plants (control freak trait perhaps lol) but I shall learn to appreciate a bit of shrubiness. I like those pictures of roses in containers that DA have on their website as they look so perfectly shaped and manicured.
@celcius_kkw DA "cheat" with they photos - they usually have more than one roses in their pots (for example that awesome photo of Princess Alexandra of Kent is three roses there as far as I know), they also photograph the best pots and plants they have and from the best angle. I a garden, it's never going to look like that and you won't be able to recreate that look on a balcony.
Another thing that can happen when you support a rose like this is that it takes it as a message that it should grow longer and thinner canes (climb). When you leave the canes unsupported, they often grow shorter and stronger. For this reason, it's often better to use supports only temporarily to support the blooms and prevent breakage or wind damage.
