Hello Marlorena, I have purchased the Prince Gardiner rose, and if i remember correctly you said you may get one. I bought mine from Style roses and it’s flowered with pale pink full flowers but the neck stem is so weak that it hangs down. You may want to check it out before you buy. Val
@valerieroberts … Val, thank you for this information, however I think you will find that this improves with age... your rose is new, and the rootstock is not able to supply it with all the moisture it needs to hold those blooms... it's a common problem in first season roses.. ...this rose will grow as a short climber … and it holds its blooms upwards and outwards when established.... give it more time I think... may need a year or so, but it's well worth it..
@Marlorena thanks so much for sharing all that here and elsewhere and your recent extensive responses to my queries. Are you planning ahead for next year, getting new roses in later (bareroot), removing unwanted ones? I find the planning aspect to gardening a lot of fun as well!
@micearguers …. oh that's ok thank you... yes I enjoy planning, and making lists.. but I try to leave it late as otherwise I will change my mind too much... I have only a couple of spots available now, so it will be a difficult decision to whittle down about 30 roses that I want, to just 3 or 4....
I have quite a few in pots too, it's a good way of seeing if you really like a rose before it gets a permanent planting, if ever.. but it's also easier to ring the changes if one gets bored with a particular rose as I often do actually... I just remove from pot, some fresh compost, and in goes another...
@Marlorena I'm trying to use the website https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/ -- but all my useful searches return empty. That is, if I specify 'any yellow' as colour, I get 555 pages of results, but if I add just one more criterion for habit, no results are returned. I've tried selecting many habits (e.g. small, medium, large) assuming it would then accept any of them ... I've also tried selecting other criteria e.g. under bloom and foliage. Is there a secret trick or am I missing the blooming obvious (most likely!) !? I'm trying to find my last rose unknown rose ... may as well try to find a picture now.
@micearguers ... to use the advanced search on there you need to be a paying member... it costs about £25 a year, can't remember exactly... otherwise it won't work... ..you can use the ordinary search if you know the name of the rose, but not the advanced... ..you can use some of the advanced search facilities but not all of them.. is what I should have said... it's 'limited'... that's why it won't allow you to use other search criteria...
@Marlorena aha thank you, I thought I was going crazy. Fair enough, I don't think I saw any indication or text that this is the case, strangely. I found only two not-so-great photos of my last mystery rose; it has hardly any thorns, a bit of a sparse habit (could be due to where it is located in my garden), and I would say elongated elegant branches, height around 200cm. It is scented ... maybe slightly citrussy but I'm not good with describing scent at all. It flowers with a first flush that has now finished and then intermittently afterwards. It does not have an abundance of flowers. I hope you don't mind including these pictures in your lovely thread ... and of course I'm not expecting you be my personal rose finder, just in case the pictures give some clue.
@micearguers … sorry, I can't tell from those... what we need for i.d. on roses are full head on shots of a fully open bloom, taken on a cloudy day [no sun glare], preferably more than one bloom shown in various stages, and a distance shot of the whole bush to see what it grows like... also an indication of when it was likely planted, roughly what year.. ...there are masses of yellow floribunda, hybrid tea and Austin roses out there... so it's difficult even with the best of information...
...yes sorry about the advanced search facility.. it says somewhere on there what you can access as a visiting guest, and the extras as a premium member... to be honest I find the advanced search not a lot of use, as you get all the roses from America and Australia etc. that weren't released here... what I usually do is check the inventories of rose growers in the UK, like Austins, Beales, CK Jones..Style roses.. etc etc.. and see if they have anything that looks like the one I'm looking for.. and then check from the name search on HMF... as most roses we grow are usually supplied from one or other of our nurseries here... of course if it's an older rose it may have been discontinued, and if it was imported, [often are these days from unknown amateur breeders in Holland].. then .. no chance I'm afraid...
Munstead Wood is on my watch list at the moment too.. lol... another dreadfully thorny creature, but it has those dark cherry blooms you don't see often... but the architecture on it is shocking..
I’ve recently bought a potted munstead wood from DA and found it to be have a rather haphazard structure - canes going in all sorts of direction. I initially thought it might have been disturbed during the transfer process but it sounds like it’s prone to have a dishevelled look? (I take it that’s you meant by it’s shocking architecture)
here is a pic:
Ive since tied it to a couple of sticks to create a more pleasing shape but haven’t got the picture on my phone yet. Will post it next week when I get back, would love to see what you think of it.
