I used to grow 'Golden Showers'... such a good rose, upright and trouble free, floriferous and healthy... bright yellow really stands out... but one moves on and different roses are preferred..
I got some rain yesterday, and few showers today... I actually have a water butt that got filled up... Too cold for roses to show much for this week... here are a few things out now, and some photos of my roses from previous year just to keep it ticking over..
Along a quiet lane, I have this 50 foot long Mixed Border.. where I use succession planting, which is very difficult to get right.. from April to October, it generally has two main peaks with some constants going on as support... I've been at it for 10 years and I'm never satisfied, always tweaking... the first peak will be late May to late June. ..this is just half of it below.. there are about a dozen roses in it all over the place..
Halimium libanotis still looking good...
I do like these Berberis for frontage planting, I like the round balls of foliage.. this one is 'Bagatelle'.. I wish I had more.. I also have 'Admiration' which is visible centre of top photo.. nice edging plants...
..my favourite Foxglove is the Excelsior strain.. I also like the Giant Spotted and pure white 'alba' forms...
..the single flowered rose is 'Kew Gardens' and the pink is an old Bourbon rose 'Mme. Lauriol de Barny... whose scent is simply divine..
..the white rose here is 'Desdemona' [Austin]. showing how it can be induced to climb..
Hi Marlorena, I know you grow this - I found some Brunnera Jack Frost for sale finally in a garden centre - although it wasn't cheap. I found it looks much more attractive in person than I found it in photos. How long does it take to grow clumpy enough for division? If planted now would it be ready next spring?
@Mr. Vine Eye ....these are incredibly easy plants to grow and propagate from... if I bought say a 2L plant I could probably get about a dozen more of it straight away... although of course I would wait until after it's flowered.. ... you could literally put a sharp knife through it, cutting into small pieces, and pop these into soil anywhere you like, water them in, and before long you've got a new plant growing away.. obviously those little pieces won't flower this season, but they will develop for next year..
They can take an awful lot of abuse, digging up dividing and replanting... just a little small piece broken off with a touch of root on it, will grow..
About midsummer I shear off all the leaves as they start to look a bit manky, and then they grow nice fresh ones which look good rest of the year..
I grow mostly shrub roses and climbers.. they fit in with a perennial border and tolerate close planting... the main rose season for such roses is mid May - mid July... about 8 weeks... after that, disease can set in, dribs and drabs of blooms with a fuller flush in autumn... other plants can take over.. so I tend to plant with that 8 weeks in mind, as anything else is too ambitious really..
2 plants I use a lot are... Hesperus matronalis [sweet rocket], in both mauve and white... and Geranium cantabrigiense, which comes in a range of colours from white, to blush pink, pink and mauve... the ones I have are 'Biokovo'..'Hillary Rendell'..'Cambridge'...'Vorjura'..'Crystal Rose'... another is 'Karmina'.. the whites are similar as are the pinks - difficult to tell apart... but they all make exceptional and attractive ground cover.. frogs like to hide in amongst them too.. and they flower for exactly the 8 week period..
Hesperus today... some might need staking.. ..in flower with Desdemona roses
I like them with Foxgloves but they must be placed near the front, not shaded out.. ..the rose is 'Zephirine Drouhin'..
Geranium x cantabrigiense varieties today... I like to mix the colours..so these will be mauve, blush pink and white..
'Hillary Rendell'.. one of the above when in flower..
sun, or part shade.. moist or dry, no problem... and so easy to propagate..
.. a couple pics from previous years... if you haven't got either of these roses in your garden,... well.. I think you should consider, if you like this type of course... not everyone would..
'Kew Gardens' [Austin]… thornless and always in flower.. 8 x 8 foot
'Scepter'd Isle'..[Austin].. strong scent.. a bloom machine..and easy to fit in.. 5 x 3 foot.
