Anyway, the main thing is that no one was seriously injured , it could have been much worse in terms of lives lost.
I read last nigh that a firefighter had been badly hurt 😞
They are saying this morning that the firefighter was not as badly injured as first thought, hopefully that is correct.

I had never heard of breitbart until I did a search for attacks on french churches.  I apologise  for anyone upset by the quote. However there does seem to be many attacks on French churches, mostly ones not undergoing renovation.   Church doors do not accidentally go up in flames.  I am told that there should have been a constant patrol as firewatch when this sort of renovation takes place. No doubt any direct  cause will have gone up in smoke as it were, whether an angle grinder generating sparks, or a workman carelessly disposing of a cigarette.
I am not religious, but admire these buildings for their architecture and beauty created by skilled craftsmen. I doubt there are enough craftsmen with the skills left to restore this. They certainly will not have a forest of oak trees to cut down to make a new roof.
I have not been to Paris, but I did stand in Reims cathedral, a similar style, admiring the great Rose windows.

@fidgetbones, I wasn't offended by it in the least.
Like you , I'm not religious but love these buildings. I also loved the Museum of Islamic Art in Kuala Lumpur and Buddhist  temples in Thailand and Hindu temples in India.
It's the blinkered ideologies I despise, not their artworks.

Trump suggested Paris should use aerial
water tankers to put out the fire ... oh yes, thousands of tonnes of water crashing down on a medieval building ... that’d preserve it of course 🙄
I couldn't even laugh when I read that. Almost as useful as the time he suggested wildfires could be prevented by raking up all the leaves in forests.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Same here.  Always visit notable churches when we go wandering but for the beauty - or otherwise - of what a collective effort of human planning, invention, skill and artistry can produce.  Found a gem in Toulouse - a former convent with beautiful walls using coloured stones to pick out features and simple but amazing coloured windows casting further patterns on the walls.  Far more engaging than the basilica.

One of the dangers of t’internet ... folks keep clicking until they find something that reinforces their views (and that makes them feel their views are validated of course)  ... that’s what’s caused the awful divisions in the USA.

Not saying that’s what you did @fidgetbones ((hug)) , but it is so important to check sources and not take stuff at face value just ‘cos it’s there.

Churches here get ‘attacked’ too ... sometimes in order to rob or vandalize... sometimes in anger resulting from the divisions that are increasing in our community. Sometimes because of hatred of a particular religion, sometimes because of hatred of all religion. We have to find out the real reasons why folk can’t respect difference and feel so angry ... and then do something about it.

Living as we do near a major teaching hospital and the university and a big art school this is a very multicultural community.

The other day I read of a plan to buy a run down shop and start an Islamic Centre (not a mosque) where everyone from the area would be welcome in order to get to know each other and socialise.

Two days later on a local networking site  I received a vile rascist rant proposing a campaign to ensure it didn’t happen.

Fortunately it was taken down almost immediately, but what hope is there ... 😭

I am with Hostafan, in that there seem to be more wars and problems started by religion, than cured by them.

War is always about power and control over people and resources.  Religion is just an excuse but it's odd how many religions also crave the power and resources and thus foment war.

I see Putin has offered his sympathies to France, describing Notre Dame as one of the most important sites in the "cult" of Christianity.

Someone very wise once said to me that we should beware of any organisation where men dress up and tell other folk what to do. 🙄
