    @Marlorena

Oh thank you! I was thinking you might have been able to find the page I wasn't expecting you to recreate it.

Very kind. Which were/are your favourites?

@Marlorena It was work that brought me to the surrounding area so I couldn’t possibly not drop in 😜 I was so glad I found those two beauties yesterday. I agree with you on Boscobel: the flowers seem to ball into a cabbage when soaked, almost look like a completely different plant. That said the young blooms’ heavenly scent was simply irresistible.

@celcius_kkw ..I can tell you just wangled that trip..  lol.. I've never been...

    @Mr. Vine Eye

..oh that's ok...I just added to it a bit... I've always got plenty to say about Austins... I fall in and out of love with most of them...

...here are my favourites.. I don't have them all currently but in a larger garden, one or all of these would always find a place..
    ...in no particular order...

'Kew Gardens'... 'Royal Jubilee'...'Scarborough Fair'...'Graham Thomas'... 'The Poet's Wife'... 'Lady of Shalott'... 'Desdemona'...'Munstead Wood'....'The Ancient Mariner'... 'Lichfield Angel'[ as a  short climber, just a few thorns]... 'Bathsheba'...'The Herbalist'... 'Scepter'd Isle'.. ..'Gentle Hermione'..

I'm enjoying both Eustacia Vye and Gabriel Oak for scent - outstanding - and colour... both get blackspot.. and Tottering by Gently is growing on me, used as a climber...

..my jury is still out on 'James L. Austin' [healthy but little scent] and 'Mill on the Floss' [gets rust, black spot and cercospora]...'Vanessa Bell'..wonderful growth, quite healthy, frequent flushes, but I'm not quite in love with it totally..

climbers/others.. 'Teasing Georgia'.. magnificent, if thorny... 'Mortimer Sackler'...outstanding in all ways except some discolouration of blooms in full sun... 'Thomas a Becket' .. not for everyone.. a bit tricky to get right..

...I'll do another list whilst I'm about it, of those I would like to try, consider that I really should have but don't, or what I've heard good things about...

..ok.. here are my wants but cannot always have..

'Lady Emma Hamilton'.. everyone has this rose except me it seems..
'Golden Celebration' one of the Austin greats, that I've never grown..
'Darcey Bussell'.. always hear good things about this..
    'Falstaff'... as a climber..
''Abraham Darby' another Austin great... huge blooms, nice scent...
'Strawberry Hill'.. fruit scented, great as a climber or supported...
'The Wedgwood Rose'... weak necks, but good as a climbing rose..
'Comte de Champagnes'.. 'Cariad'... 'Corvedale'... I should like all these...
'Jude The Obscure'... in the top ten of roses for scent...
'Buttercup' unusual... another tops for scent... often recommended by Michael Marriott..
'Young Lycidas'... this flops, cascades,.. and I would like to use it in a pot, on a table...great colour and scent..
'Molineux'... I like the colour mix on this, and I hear such good reports... I don't know why I don't have it.. and if you're a Wolves supporter?... you really should...
'Princess Alexandra of Kent'.. another great Austin, not in my garden..
'Charles Darwin'... looks to be a good shorter yellow rose...compact..
..and lastly, 'The Shepherdess'. little  known, but everyone tells me what a great little rose this is... does blackspot apparently but makes up for it in so many ways...

English roses are not always the most healthy... that's the trade off... if you want the most healthiest roses, I recommend looking at those by German breeder Kordes…. they produce some of the most disease resistant roses.. it can be said they lack grace and charm, can be quite thorny... these were the roses I first started out with and they produce many each year..  'Royal William' is a Kordes rose...as is ADR winner 'Joie de Vivre'...

'Olivia Rose Austin' is supposed to be one of the most disease resistant of English roses, but lacks scent..

    Thanks!

I'm going to move Mortimer Sackler into the ground and plant Desdemona in the large pot I think.

Lady of Shallot I'll train as a climber and the other two in borders

I've liked all of these ones when I've seen them - just wondered if they were on your list.

That discount code is valid until 1st September by the way, everyone.

15% I saw it on Facebook.

Jude the Obscure was on Gardeners world yesterday the flowers look similar to pictures of woolerton old hall.

I noticed at one garden centre near me, they've got DA roses being sold under a different brand. I can't remember what it is, but it's based on a lady I think. It says like My choice, or why I chose this rose - or something like that on the front. There's Gentle Hermione, Graham Thomas and a few others. They have a David Austin tag on the cane.

£16 I think, for a potted rose. They looked good. Right next to the official ones in DA pots for £24.99

I've not seen those so far... strange...

Yes Jude does resemble Wollerton, but so many Austins are lookalikes... it's almost impossible to tell the difference just from a single bloom...
I'll be finding a place for it this winter...

  • @Marlorena I actually saw a buttercup at DA’s garden this week and having seen Michael Marriott raving about it I was most excited to get a sniff of it, but then I was perhaps a little underwhelmed. The fragrance was pleasing but did not leave a strong impression on me, as opposed to Boscobel anc lady M that I eventually bought. I do think people can have different perception of scent and for me it fell a little flat.

Also having visited DA rose garden before on a rainy day it’s interesting how roses can smell so differently when it’s wet vs on a dry day. Some of the roses that really stood out when it was wet in terms f fragrance were England’s rose, James Galway and Lochnivar (a practically unknown rose) but their scent appears to underwhelmed when I went to see them again in a dry sunny day.

Ag the joy of roses, they do change so much depending on the weather don’t they.
