...edhelka / Nollie...  thanks so much for your great contributions and keeping us all company along the way...  and also the Admin people here for not closing the thread prematurely...
...I've also been pleasantly surprised at the number of young men who have found an interest in roses, as this subject is so often portrayed as a pastime for older ladies on television... we need more young men to take up the cause... Nick Bailey recently gave a talk at the Heritage Roses Group in Birmingham too...  so special mention to Mr Vine Eye, Adrian in Merseyside, Daniel R.. and Jason, amongst others who I may not know....
… don't desert us !... and we want to see your roses next summer...

...all my new ones are in pots as my neighbour informed me that he's going to pull down my 60 foot fence - which he owns - and put up a nice brand new one.. so looking forward to that, although I wasn't anticipating it as the old one is still good for some years.... all these roses are destined for the new fence next Spring...  they should flower in the Greenhouse maybe late April onwards... for planting in June - I hope..

  • Thankyou for starting this thread and the wonderful Notes from a Rose Garden thread @Marlorena. They have been educational and the photos have been beautiful. I have really enjoyed seeing all the different rose varieties and planting combinations, also what plants fellow gardeners choose as their rose companions to give added interest.
Yesterday I purchased a DA Golden Celebration rose which I have admired for a long while. I hadn't intended on plant buying. I only popped in for a bag of bark. The GC had just had their new Austin rose delivery that day so I chose the best from six.
I saw an established one at an Open Garden a few months back. The flowers were huge and the scent intoxicating. I've seen people with this rose say they grow in through an obelisk due to it's want to climb, so that is what I will do.

...oh thanks so much lilly…  and delighted you got that gorgeous rose... I didn't know Garden Centres got deliveries of new Austins at this time.. I usually go see in March...
..an obelisk is a good idea for this rose.. it's not one I have so I look forward to seeing more of yours in time...

  • @Marlorena I admit I was surprised to see the new stock. They obviously buy in bareroots and pot them themselves as they are not in the usual green Austin square pots. It was much cheaper at £17. 50 too. My most frequently visited GC sells them at £23.00. They stock about 15 different varieties, which is more than the much larger GC had last spring.
I am very tempted to get another, they had a few very strong looking Bathsheba . They also had a deep red called Heathcliff that I've not seen elsewhere. Alas, they didn't have Gabriel Oak which I would love to have.

...thanks Lily … how unusual.. I was wanting another Gabriel Oak so will have to wait on that... Heathcliff was discontinued a few years ago, no idea why.. so good to see it back on the shelves... I think at Dobbies they sell them for £24.99 something like that..

Does anyone grow roses in acid soil? I'm assuming that's what I have as my new house has good azaleas and pieris. Missing my roses.

My David Austen rose ‘Tuscany Superb’ was delivered like this at 7.30am.  Hope there’s not too much harm done.  :/

So this post was nearly a year ago, DA sent me a new Tuscany Superb but said it was ok to keep the battered one and see if it could recover.

    This is it today!

So glad I kept it and babied it a bit!

This is its 'cousin', the healthy replacement that was sent out, just on the cusp of flowering, colour looks nice already:
