    ..oh thanks Lizzie..

@valerieroberts … thank you... Papa Meilland is a weak growing rose... long time since I've had it.. needs manuring and lots of feeding can help,  but it's never going to be the most vigorous rose out there...weak necks are a given...  just keep it going for the scent... you can try greenhouse but I'm not sure it will make much difference.. best of luck... south Devon is very nice, I've been there a lot..

A question about climbing rose spacing @Marlorena before you go!

How much fence width to allocate according to it’s stated height? The fence is going to be 3.5m wide by 1m high and the bed is 1.1m deep.

The plan was to plant both Stormy Weather (2 - 2.5m high) and Sandringham (1.5m high) against this fence with an obelisk in the middle for Rose de Molinard and a purple clematis. Does that sound too tight?

Here is Stormy Weather trained along a low fence, this is the sort of thing I am hoping to achieve:

    What do you think?

The alternative would be to have Sandringham and Rose de Molinard on the fence and Stormy Weather in the middle grown up the Obelisk (probably without the clematis).

  • I've really enjoyed posting and reading others posts on this thread this year!

    Looking forward to the next!

Thanks for all the advice, information and photos shared.

Had a great first year with roses and having this place to share it all has really added to it.

    Thanks all!

...thank you both too, great contributions.. and you've shown us some good roses !...  so looking forward to seeing them next year...

@Nollie... the height for Stormy Weather I think may be irrelevant in this case as it won't be going much above 1m or 1.1m if you are prepared to train it as shown in the picture... because you will have to train it right and left... so allowing for a spread of around 2m...  so SW should be planted bang in the middle of the fence.. this will allow just enough room for your obelisk at one end with La R de M on it... and if mine I would get an identical obelisk for the other end, where I would anticipate having just enough for Sandringham to go, kept in place by the obelisk...  I think a freestanding Sandringham without an obelisk will look odd and I wouldn't be happy with that personally..
...this way all 3 roses suit each other I think, nice colour combinations.....

    ...see what you think...

..remember, you can cram in a lot more roses in a small garden by using the free space above the perennial canopy in our busy borders...I've got more room up in the air than on the ground... like trees in a wood, a slim outline is easy to obtain using obelisks, metal frames.. wigwams…. or simple metal spikes... I've seen rambling roses 15 foot tall trained around a single post.. taking up little more than 2 feet width, less even... I have more than 10 support structures here... that's how I can grow so many roses.. so you should consider it for your 2 roses at either end I think..

I will miss this thread (and summer, warmth and blooms). Hopefully, we will survive winter somehow (and our roses too) and see each other in the next rose season (or a bit earlier because of course, we need to discuss spring purchases, pruning, new Austins etc.).
Thanks to everyone, it was a great thread.

Brilliant, thanks @Marlorena, I did wonder if there would be room for another with Stormy Weather on that fence. It does look pretty vigorous if that photo is anything to go by. I like your idea of SW centre stage and both the others on obelisks. Yes it looks as if Sandringham would need some support...

This has been a great thread, lots of ideas, inspiration and advice - it helps so much to share your thoughts and get other peoples input. Thanks to all from me too xx
