Got back to sleep and had an interesting dream with a guest appearance by Hugh Grant, of all people! The bursitis is only in one hip, but it’s the side I sleep better on. When it’s sore, I have to lie on my other side, and risk kneeing OH in the tender parts!
My mother was discharged from hospital semi comatose with a nasogastric feeding tube in situ, all with our agreement, and my nurse sister ready to provide care. However, due to delay after delay, she finally arrived home at midnight on a Friday. And of course, when we needed some advice from the feeding care specialist nurse, it was not only the weekend, but she was on holiday as well. Bless the woman, after heaving a sigh, and explaining that she had requested that they didn’t send these patients home on a Friday, she sorted us out by phone, and gave us her private number to contact her until she was back from leave. Glad you are back in your own bed, @rowlandscastle444. At least you can stop worrying about your exchange of contracts, now you’ll be worrying about the move instead. Hope you’ve managed to confirm a moving company.
I've never had sciatica before, @rowlandscastle444, so it's trial and error at the moment. I think the acute phase will pass whatever I do; the internet suggests various exercises, but there's no way I can start doing them until things settle down. I have a grabber thingy for picking things up from the floor, which is useful, but putting on socks & shoes requires contortions and considerable discomfort... and sleeping seems almost impossible at present. Like trying to sleep with cramp.
My grandpa had chronic sciatica, but was very stoic... sounds like your mum.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Do you have an electric blanket @Liriodendron ? It may sound a bit old fashioned but last year I got the type that goes under the bottom sheet and is quite thick and wooly. It has heat settings, timers and can be different temperatures on each side of a double bed. I found it did help with aches in joints and cramp in legs ( hubby has them) I was skeptical but it seemed to work, maybe because the cold bed tended to make things worse when getting in, but I didn't need to keep it on for long to get relief. 🙂
The most important thing with sciatica, is not to do nothing. It is very important that you try to keep moving, even if it is tiny amounts. It is the only thing that in proper trials has been shown to decrease recovery time. Taking adequate analgesia will improve your chances of being able to do mild exercise. I've suffered for years, due to old sporting injuries.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
That’s very useful information, @punkdoc. Especially helpful as it seems counterintuitive, usually if it hurts, advice and inclination is not to do it. I’m always confused as to when to rest a painful condition and when to keep the joint / limb moving instead. I get bored easily, so tend to rest for a bit, then get fed up and limp around slowly as best I can. At least I’m happy to use painkillers when needed, unlike OH who hates taking any tablets, and would rather moan about it instead. At least he has trained himself to take all his BP tablets as prescribed.
Actually hot water bottles don't work as well @Liriodendron , I have them too and used them before getting the blanket. I think it's the all over heat, not area specific like a hot water bottle that helps.
I really didn't sleep well last night, when I thought I might. We've been given a number of boxes by one of my wife's students from the local hospital. Flat packed. I've been making them up, and filling some. Handy having our neighbours out for a while. They couldn't hear the brown tape being used - or my wife throwing empty boxes down the stairs for me to fill. 👷

I'm going to try and get an earlier one, and maybe catch up on a little.
